Values

WHO WE ARE SFU Childcare is a nationally recognized not for profit childcare centre for quality early learning and care. We have provided and promoted a play based, family focused early care and learning program for children aged 0 to 12 for over 40 years. Nestled on the campus of Simon Fraser University, our program facilities and curriculum reflect the beauty and nature of our mountain location. Drawing inspiration from the Early Learning Framework document from the BC Ministry of Education, SFU Childcare staff engages daily in providing quality care and designing environments that respect the capabilities and curiosities of children.

¡

As a childcare nonprofit organization we are committed to SFU Childcare Society being a place where:

¡

  • Children are valued for their ability to do meaningful work, their wonder and curiosity, their perspectives,

and ability to play

  • Families are valued for their bonds and traditions, their commitment to work, home and community, and

their dreams for their children

  • Staff are valued for their vision, their delight in children, their skill and knowledge, their

commitment to families

Challenges in providing Quality Childcare

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/small-business/sb-growth/the- challenge/a-modular-playhouse-for-employees-in-the-baby-zone/article27647074/ The Challenge: Should Manasc Isaac Architects embark on this new line of business? More broadly, is it financially smart for small businesses to host their own daycares?

Non Profit Childcare

› The focus should be on serving children,

families and the community – a cause vs. a profit

› Satisfying families vs shareholders › Parents participate in non-profit

governance

slide-22
SLIDE 22

Limited Funding makes quality extremely difficult

It affects:

› The ability to create purpose/professionalism › The ability to hire passionate and invested

educators

› Unable to build and design indoor and outdoor

environments specifically for children. Eg. Current reality is shared spaces with other groups, storefronts

SFU Childcare Society has SFU as a third party funder and parent demographic that can afford to pay higher fees. Increasingly that is becoming more problematic. In Surrey childcare providers seldom have third party support and the parent demographic can be quite different. The current income based government subsidy alone does not cover all the operational costs for those providing childcare
