TRS 104: First Year Experience (FYE) Growth 2014- 2016: TRS 283 - First pilot sections were offered in Winter 2015 Fall 2015: 7 sections Winter 2016: 3 sections Fall 2016: 6 sections 2017 – 2019 TRS 104 FYE : Fall 2017: 10 sections Winter 2017: 5 sections Fall 2018: 21 sections Winter 2018: 8 sections Fall 2019: 23 sections Winter 2019: 8 sections Between 2015 and 2019 we more than tripled our sections and more than quadrupled our enrollment

  17. Welcome Visit (1st Visit) ⚫ 2 nd week (Early in the semester) (Note: From the start date of the course) ⚫ Length of time : 30 - 60 minute ⚫ Purpose: Introduce services and staff, Check-in with the students, Students complete “ FYE Check-in Card ”, Hand out “ Career and Program Semester Plan ”

  18. Career Process ⚫ Who am I? ⚫ What do I want to do? ⚫ Why Do I want to do it? ⚫ How am I going to be most successful? ⚫ Learn about their interest, personality, values, and strengths via Career assessments

Scheduling Of One-On-One Advising Appointment ⚫ During first class visit, students make a one-on-one advising appointment. ⚫ Students use the self-scheduling system to make appointments with the: 1. Career Advisor – FYE Follow-up appointment, or 2. Counseling – FYE appointment, or 3. Pathway Advisor – FYE appointment

  21. Assessment Visit (2nd Visit) ⚫ 4 TH week - Middle of the Semester – ⚫ Length of time: 1 hour 20 minutes – (ENTIRE CLASS TIME) ⚫ Purpose: 1. Complete “Strong Interest Inventory” (SII) Group Interpretation Workshop 2. RIASEC – Holland’s Party Game 3. SII Interpretation 4. Begin researching using O*Net and other online resources to focus on career research.

Narrative From Students – Strong in-class workshop ⚫ What information received today will help you make progress toward your personal/educational goal? ⚫ “It puts in words what I might be good at it. It helps me be more decisive.” ⚫ “I can better identify the careers I have interest in and ask more questions.” ⚫ “ It helped me revise and think about the reason I chose my career.” ⚫ “It helped me realize other careers I could potentially be good at/enjoy.” ⚫ “It showed me how involved education is.” ⚫ “Solidified career path.” ⚫ “Self - exploration and resources.”

  24. Individual Career Advising Appointment ⚫ 5 TH – 8 th week Length of time: 60 minutes ⚫ Purpose: 1. Continue Career Counseling 2. Introduce the Career Manual 3. Work on action plan and career decision 4. Class advising 5. Connect to appropriate Pathway Advisor/Counselor if no longer undecided/exploring Student will develop a four semester plan with Pathway Advisor/Counselors

Reality Check Visit (3rd Visit) ⚫ 8 TH week (Ideally happens right before the withdrawal date – so students understand their options) Length of time: 90 minutes – (ENTIRE CLASS TIME) ⚫ Purpose: 1. Student will complete the “Reality Check Self - Assessment” document for student to assess his/her progress before meeting individually with the career advisor 2. Check- in on students’ progress after one -on-one appointment. 3. Meet with student individually in a separate area (hallway) to check- in on students’ progress with Career Action Plan. Depending on the student and his/her progress, s/he might be good to go or need to make another appointment with career advisor.

  28. Check-out Visit (4th Visit) ⚫ Last 2weeks of the semester ⚫ An opportunity for the student to finalize commitment to program.

Check-in & Check-out Data Fall ‘18 Percentage of students who went from undecided to 72% decided Fall ‘18 Increase in students’ confidence levels from their initial 45.7% Check-in to Check-out report *Winter ‘19 Percentage of students who went from undecided to 100% decided *Winter ‘19 Increase in students’ confidence levels from their initial 53.2% Check-in to Check-out report *Smaller response sample due to fewer sections of FYE
