Indian Registry System – A Novel Data Source

  • IRS registry received at ICES from Aboriginal Affairs Canada
  • Contains information on all Registered/Status First Nations in

Ontario, living both on- and off-reserve as of June 2013

  • Data elements
  • Individual identifiers for linkage (names, sex, date of birth)
  • Band affiliation
  • Date of registration
  • Record status (e.g. active, inactive, confirmed death)
  • Province of residence when registered
  • Residence status (on reserve / off reserve)
  • Parent-child relationships
  • Marital status

  • 176,266 (83%) of Ontario residents recorded in IRS have been

linked to ICES Registered Persons Database (RPDB)

  • 10% did not link to RPDB due to death date prior to 1990
