Feeding the City is a 1 year-long incubation programme for early-stage entrepreneurs passionate about creating sustainable food- related businesses that benefit UK communities and society at large, while creating employment opportunities particularly for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Feeding the City
- Nation-wide programme
- 12 months of intense support
- Fully funded
- Designed for teams or individuals who are rooted in the
community they are serving
- Supporting sustainable food-related businesses to
benefit communities, society and the environment Partners : Impact Hubs, Sustain, Food Ethics Council, WWF, Social Enterprise UK Funders: The Mark Leonard Trust, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Seeds of Change
We want to to empower communities to make a positive difference to their lives by running a food business.
How does it work?
After applications, 16 teams are selected for a 1 month-long learning journey, simultaneously rolled
- ut in 2 major UK cities
The 8 that show the most entrepreneurial talent and impact potential in their target communities receive 9 further months of targeted support At the end of the programme, 8 food-related social businesses are created
Fo Focus cus
Targeted communities can be local and geographic in nature (such as the schools in the Borough of Hackney); or a particular segment of the population (for example: the elderly community) Submitted ideas can relate to the production, access, processing, distribution, consumption or/and disposal of food in a more sustainable and socially impactful way Participants don’t need to present a proof of concept, but need to prove they are backed by the target community they are aiming to benefit The programme looks at food issues from a systemic point of view and contribute to address one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Testimonials from the 2018 cohort
“I’m not sure we would have made so much progress without Feeding the City incredible help and expertise. They are always
- n hand to give us advice and talk through any problems we
may be experiencing, as well as putting us in touch with experts in the field. The best part of being on this programme is meeting other incredible food start-ups. We have made some amazing friendships and it is great to have other people to bounce ideas off and share the highs and lows of setting up your own business. Feeding the City also gave Voodoo Burgers
- ur very first catering platform, enabling us to establish
- urselves as a brand and to focus and promote our menu."
Je Jenny y from Voodoo Bu Burgers “The BCG training was very professional and attended by an impressive number of consultants, two of whom even had relevant food start-up experience. We named threats and opportunities along the complete supply chain process of our particular business idea. It was enlightening to do an exercise that I had done many times on large scale industrial projects applying to our little start-up! Everyone really got into the exercise and the results were useful for our own follow-up. Great minds focussed for an hour can give a great boost to a small business start-up!” Be Belinda from Ku Kurds & Whey y
“Our mentorship experience with Helen from Kindling Trust has been an enlightening and essential part of
- ur growth as a social business.. Had we not been able
to call on Helen's expertise and large network through the Kindling Trust, many questions would have been difficult to deal with and could have proved to be a time consuming and costly process overall. It is great knowing that we have Helen to call on and keep us right at the early but key stages of setting up the business.” Co Colin n from Tenem enement ent Veg eg “Lizzie has been a tremendous help to us. As a trained sourdough bread baker and previously the owner of a food business, she has given us a great deal of technical bread- making knowledge, and the confidence that what we are doing can work. Her belief in us and constant encouragement, as well as her personal commitment to helping refugees, has enabled Proof to keep going when we felt like giving up. We have enjoyed working with her to the point where we have encouraged her to consider becoming a trustee, which she is seriously thinking about” Chernise from Proof Bake kery
