  2. Geoengineering • Three proposed methods • Solar Radiation Management • Intended to reflect the sunlight back to space to reduce climate change • Carbon Dioxide Removal • Aims to suck carbon out of the atmosphere • Earth Radiation Management • Meant to offset the effects of climate change by allowing heat to escape into space • Why it is a false solution • Environmental Justice (EJ) communities are left out of the talk • Favored by former climate change deniers, specifically in the Global North • Disproportionate negative impact on the Global South and EJ communities • Involves manipulating nature

  3. Carbon Markets/Cap and Trade/Cap and Invest • Intent of mass reduction of GHG emissions • Why it is a false solution • These programs increase air contamination in EJ communities • Majority of emission sources are in EJ communities • Continues our reliance on fossil fuels • Those models have not worked in EJ communities • The carbon caps are sometimes not in EJ communities • Money derived from the capping carbon does not offset the impact from higher amounts of carbon releases in EJ communities.

  4. Industrial Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) • Captures, transfers, stores carbon dioxide • Why it is a false solution • Ignores the root cause of climate change • Delays transition to renewables • More expensive than renewables • Promotes increased extraction of pollution of fossil fuels • Benefits the fossil fuel industry • Keeps us reliant on dirty energy • Carbon Storage and Transfer sites are most likely in EJ/ Low Income and Indigenous communities

  5. Nuclear Energy • Moving from carbon based energy to nuclear • Why it is a false solution • Radioactivity and nuclear waste • More expensive than renewables • Indigenous communities and their lands are targeted for mining and nuclear waste sites • Radioactive traces in all fish species in the Pacific Ocean from Fukushima explosion

  6. Climate Smart Agriculture • Planting “carbon absorbing plants” • Supposed to curb harmful air emissions • Why it is a false solution • Band-Aid approach • Heavy corporate influence • Does no reduce pollution at the source • Ignores non-corporate farmer and community voices

  7. Forest Management / REDD and REDD+ • Indigenous peoples primarily in the Global South are asked to replant forests, keep count of trees and in some cases there are evicted from their ancestral and traditional territories. • Why it is a false solution • The Global North and other industrialized countries continue to pollute the air at the same pace or actually could increase the pace of air pollution • Puts burden on EJ/Low income and Indigenous communities around the planet • Heavy corporate and governmental interests

  8. Incineration • Combustion: burns waste at high temperatures, generating electric energy and heat • Plasma Arc Recycling: melts and vaporizes waste • Two products • Sygna: mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen • Used for energy • Aggregate: glass-like material • Used for construction • Why it is a false solution • Ineffective at eliminating plastic pollution • Dangerous for human health and marine life • Emits toxic air pollution, toxic flue ash, other hazardous waste

  9. Biofuels • Made from recently living plant material, goes contrary to more biodiversity • Used to replace other transportation fuels like • Petroleum and gasoline • Made from foods such as • Corn, sugar cane, and soybeans • Why it is a false solution? • Maintains reliance on dirty energy • Speed up deforestation • Causes food cost to increase, especially in developing countries • Create competition for resources such as water, land, food

  10. Final Thoughts • The Dirty 8 false solutions: • Violate the principles of EJ • Maintain reliance on dirty energy • Disproportionately affect the Global South and Indigenous EJ/Low Income communities • Does not address the root cause of climate change which is the consumption from the industrialized nations in the Global North • Elected officials need to confront the problem of overconsumption of resources and the reliance on fossil fuels • Best solution is a global switch to renewables immediately • The burden should not be on Indigenous, EJ/ Low Income communities, but Indigenous, EJ/ Low Income communities should be at the forefront of the planning of solutions.
