- VHE was founded in 1979 in South Yorkshire,
- perating as a civil engineering specialist.
- The company has expanded and diversified,
providing contaminated land remediation and civil engineering services throughout the UK.
- VHE now directly employs over 70 staff and
has a turnover in the region of £20m per annum.

North Gawber Colliery, Barnsley Harworth Estates - £1.6 million
- Redevelopment for up to 325 residential
properties.
- Significant earthworks, involving breaking out
structures and the crushing of hard materials.
- 300m x 6m high Reinforced earth wall.
- Diversion of a watercourse.
- Attenuation pond.
- Construction of a road, footpath, footbridge
and cycle-way forming part of the new site infrastructure.
Knowle Avenue, Ashton Under Lyme Kier Living - £55,000
- Phase 1 soil stabilisation / lime modification
provided by our experienced in-house team.
- Incorporated geotechnical improvement of
the road formation for new housing areas.
Sighthill TRA Glasgow City Council - £11 million
- Remediation of historical contamination
both ex-situ and in-situ in particular Galligu.
- It will also see demolition, ground
engineering, deep grouting, drainage diversions and infrastructure works.
- Design and build contract covering 50
hectares.
- Almost 800 new homes are to be built
including new roads and pedestrian bridges, amenity parkland, a new school and sports campus, student accommodation and more.
Shawfield Enabling Works Clyde Gateway Developments - £3.9 million
- Key strategic site in advance of future
development and pedestrian linkages for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
- Re-engineering to create development platforms,
accesses and sustainable urban drainage systems.
- Remediation of Hexavalent Chromium CrVI.
- Innovative use of Calcium Polysulphide imported
from Japan.
- 8000 rods inserted and almost 150,000 injections.
- Ground Engineering Awards - Highly
Commended.
Luneside East Development Luneside East Ltd - £3.4 million
- The 7Ha site on the south bank of the River
Lune has a long history of industrial uses which led to contamination.
- VHE helped secure £4 million from the
Growing Places Fund for the mixed use development including housing.
- A design and build scheme - VHE developed
a remediation strategy for the site with WYG, which reduced the reliance on off- site disposal.
Rylands Garage, Birmingham Birmingham City Council - £0.2 million
- Removal of redundant fuel tanks and
interceptors, exploration for LNAPL contaminants and the removal of hydrocarbon material for Bioremediation.
- Demolition of a public house and car park.
- Concrete slabs and foundations, covering the
whole site area, removed for crushing and subsequent reuse on site.
- Below slab made ground re-engineered to a
depth of circa 2m across the whole of the site to create the platform for planned development.
Commonwealth Games Athletes Village Glasgow City Council - £6.5 million
- 33 hectare site.
- Remediation of 112 contaminated hotspots.
- Selective excavation of around 140,000m³ of
contaminated soils and materials.
- Approximately 100,000m³ of the material
underwent soil washing.
- Bio-remediation.
- Invasive species treatment.
- Service disconnections and diversion.
- Demolition.
Otter Island, Leeds Strata Homes - £1.5 million
- Site Clearance Works.
- Turnover of the site including excavating cut
to fill 30,000m3 of made ground including 5000m3 of hard materials which were processed for removal from site and recycled.
- 1200 tonne of non-hazardous materials
which were unsuitable for reuse were removed from site.
- Extensive Vibration monitoring was
employed to ensure that works were carried
- ut in accordance with the agreed limits.
Trent Basin, Nottingham HCA / Blueprint - £0.8 million
- The works involved the dredging of the basin
inlet, concrete repairs to both the basin walls and those out on the River Trent and the remediation of the land adjacent to the basin.
- VHE secured a second contract on a
recommendation by the Homes and Communities Agency to replace 500m of basin and river walls.
Cudworth & West Green Bypass Barnsley MBC - £17 million
- The Cudworth & West Green Bypass comprised the
construction of 5.2km of single carriageway road.
- Incorporating 5 roundabouts and associated
ancillary works.
- The road was constructed on embankments up to a
maximum height of 10 metres and in cuttings to a maximum depth of 7 metres.
- A 110 tonne rail bridge installed.
Millennium Town Park, St Helier The States of Jersey - £8 million
- This challenging project involved a complex
public realm scheme to remediate a 1.3Ha former town gasworks in the centre of St Helier.
- A key feature of the remediation of the park
was the reuse of existing site material as Jersey has no facility to treat contaminated material.
- Some material was treated and transported
to Europe by barge.
Scour protection and flood alleviation Network Rail, Environment Agency
- Scour protection works to 17 rail structures
throughout the UK.
- Works involved a mixture of activities including
installation of temporary dams, fish relocation, excavation of river silts and rubble, diversion of watercourses.
- Permanent works involved installation of fibre
reinforced concrete fabric mattresses, placement of rock armour/ gabion walls and brickwork repairs.
National Grid Remediation Framework National Grid Property Holdings
- Since 1996 VHE has been retained by National
Grid Property Holdings under their national term contract to undertake the remediation of former coal gas production and coking works sites.
- In 2014 VHE were appointed to the National
Grid Framework for Gas Holder demolition and have to date demolished eight holders with two more currently ongoing.
- VHE are also on the Scottish Gas Network
framework.
Neepsend Lane Gasworks (Sheffield) National Grid Property Holdings - £10 million
- VHE has carried out five phases of work on
the former Neepsend Gasworks in Sheffield between 2006 and 2012.
- Remedial works included screening the
- verlying construction and demolition
wastes, selective excavation, treatment and disposal of contaminated soils.
- A total of 17,000 tonnes of contaminated
material was sentenced for treatment by bioremediation.
Ackworth, West Yorkshire Strata Homes - £4 million
- VHE have undertaken three phases of works at
Ackworth since 2008 on behalf of our client Strata Homes, creating over 800 new homes.
- Works included turnkey solutions of
demolition, remediation, ground engineering, reclamation, roads, sewers and storm water attenuation.
