Where do we come from?
- Education remains one of the strongholds of EHA’s activities.
- In the past five years:
- consolidated major achievements and continued to strive for lifelong
learning in hematology
- by offering peer-reviewed, high quality and unbiased educational tools
in various formats
- suitable for different target groups
- with the European Hematology Curriculum as the backbone of this
program.
Education | strategic goal 2014-2018
Education: what the Board said (Retreat April 2018)
Major achievements
Expansion ELC & focus blended learning Updated Curriculum Introduction Hematology Exam Expansion & new strategy
- utreach program
Strong congress program Mentoring & Education Award Launch Topics-in-Focus programs Guidelines project
Points of attention
Many competitors on the
- market. Excellence and
exclusivity are key. Keeping up with IT developments, limited possibilities to develop material & manpower Lack of position in ‘guidelines’ world
➢ September 2018: first discussion on translating EHA’s overall strategy into a strategy on education including developing tactics and tools -> presented at the October 2018 Board meeting. ➢ October – December 2018: continues discussions & development of plans ➢ January 2019: second discussion on especially tools (programs) that serve EHA’s strategy. This Board Meeting > presentation plans

‒ Being part of EHA community is very important for all members.
- Members mainly involved in research more likely become members for discounts
- n the annual congress fees.
- Members involved in clinical practice are mainly motivated for access in EHA
Learning Center.
‒ Members see EHA’s main purpose as providing education, followed by the
- rganization of congresses and meetings

Member survey results on Education
‒ EHA is particularly appreciated for its congress, meetings, educational & networking opportunities; ‒ Top reasons to become an EHA member
EHA’s vision on Learning
EHA should be the home base of continuous medical education for a broad audience of hematology professionals. EHA’s medical education program should be engaging and motivate the learners to become part of the EHA Community. EHA’s medical education program should be open to less resourced countries by
- ffering education based on their needs.
Education | Tactics
We will reach this by:
- Having an excellent online learning program as the basis for all EHA Education:
- ffering high quality content on a wide variety of topics, with a comprehensive
program as a basis
- matching different learning styles (online, offline, combination (blended))
- Serving clinicians and researchers
- Offering an interesting program of in-depth meetings (through SGWs)
- Strive for harmonization in hematology education by:
- Updating & promoting the EHA Hematology Curriculum
- Organizing & promoting a European Hematology Exam
- Serving different target groups and less resourced countries (outreach)
- Strong and continuous promotion

Challenges
Challenge #1 To guarantee a continuous supply of content Challenge #2 To efficiently and continuously create high quality online learning materials based on a solid content management plan Challenge #3 To attract also researchers to the EHA Campus
Challenge #1
To guarantee a continuous supply of content; approach
‒ All meetings EHA organizes will be recorded. Content to be used for creation of online learning tools. ‒ Third party content: actively approach supporters and relevant medical specialty organizations to share content (already collaboration with transfusionists and morphologists) ‒ Content creation
Challenge #2
Content management plan:
- 20 priority topics, already defined by Education Committee
- Start with basic level knowledge
- Expand learning formats (webinars, games, etc)
- Utilize experts mainly for providing outlines/directions and
reviewing and testing
- Work with professional companies for technical support and
medical writing (e.g. course questions). Companies already identified.
Challenge #2
20 priority topics, defined by Education Committee on January 10.
Estimated investment: Content development € 50.000,- per topic x 20 topics = € 1.000.000,-
‒ Iron deficiency / Iron metabolism / Hemochromatosis /Secondary iron overload ‒ Hereditary hemolytic anemias (non-immune) ‒ Macroangiopathic anemia, TTP/HUS ‒ Autoimmune hemolytic anemia ‒ Follicular lymphoma ‒ Miscellaneous low grade lymphomas (mantle cell, SLVL etc) ‒ Immunophenotyping (technique and applications) ‒ Diagnostic work up of Acute leukemias ‒ Cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics (The techniques and their applications) ‒ Diagnostic work up of lymphoproliferative disorders ‒ Consultative hematology (pregnancy, surgery etc.) ‒ Geriatric hematology ‒ Autoimmune cytopenia ‒ Difficult hemorrhagic disorders ‒ Infections in haematological disorders ‒ Bleeding disorders: acquired and inherited ‒ Cellular therapies(other than CARt) ‒ CARt ‒ Haemoglobinopathies ‒ Antibody treatment of HM ‒ MRD (techniques and applications)
Challenge #3
to attract also researchers to the ….

‒ Differs from clinical research:
- techniques used change rapidly
‒ membership survey shows biggest challenge: funding ‒ First topics to be developed (not specific to experimental/clinical):
- Practical tips on writing a good grant
- How to get your work published in HemaSphere and other journals
Work with external parties for creation of materials, and for scientific input.
Additional investment needed: € 50.000,- per topic 6 topics = € 300.000,-
Content plan 2019-2020 – Research Campus
Platform development
Outside creating content the EHA Campus platform as such should be developed to:
- keep up with developments in online learning
- create infrastructure for:
- rganization webinars
- new learning formats, such as gamification
- meeting registration
- payment
- continue optimizing structure and user friendly design
Additional investment needed: € 200.000,-

Part 2. European Hematology Curriculum
European Hematology Curriculum
Curriculum is updated every 5 years:
- New version in 2022
- Preparations to start end 2020
No additional investment needed Pediatric Curriculum:
- Gap with Pediatrics identified
- Task force with pediatric hematologists is being composed
- Implementing pediatric curriculum on EHA website requires additional
investment Additional investment needed: € 50.000,-
From Tactics to Tools.....
Part 3. European Hematology Exam
- Main session: Amsterdam, June 14, during EHA24
- Parallel session: Bern, Switzerland, June 14
To provide access to all those interested in obtaining the extra quality stamp, EHA invited all European national societies to
- rganize a local parallel session. 8 countries interested so far.
Challenge of organization by National Societies: more difficult to create ‘hubs’.
Exam 2019
Exam 2020 and beyond
Expand question database to be prepared for:
- Progress test on EHA Campus
- Exam 2 times a year (2nd time with parallel sessions in various regions)
Additional investment needed for support and review of all questions: € 30.000,- Set up parallel sessions in hubs in 3 regions, organized by EHA instead of National Societies = accessible to all instead of only national candidates. Additional investment needed: € 100.000,-
