Sustainability? For who?

The draft opinion says: “sustainability at the heart”. BUT

  • CEO of KBC Bank: sustainability = BAU for eternity
  • Rio+20: sustainability = “sustained growth” (x16)
  • There are no pillars of sustainability, only circles

Time to get real – 1

The role of business in SDGs in particular is usually portrayed as an “opportunity” but there's no business case for respecting human rights. There is also no science case for drilling in the Arctic or Amazon (Nature magazine). It's not about discouraging or taxing but about banning.

Time to get real – 2

The circular economy is needed but has limited scope. Majority cannot be circular 7% is circular, 40% is

  • entropic. Can never go to 100%.

The metabolism of the global economy is too high. Earth scientists says: leave 4/5 in the ground. Now we extract every drop of fossil fuel possible and then pray to God that nobody uses it.

We need stronger market interventions to keep the bad companies in check

  • Legally binding rules for corporate accountability
  • UN Treaty on Business & Human Rights
  • Ecocide = 6th crime against humanity
  • Access to justice on env. matters in EU (Aarhus)

We need science based policymaking

6th mass extinction & CC ask absolute reductions GDP ≠ progress. Progress = GPI, HDI, GNH What is “growth that benefits all”? Growth of what? SDGs: unclear about “sustainable growth” vs “SCP” Quota saved fish, not CSR or labels or consumers

We need to get rid of myths

  • “Consumer is king” kills producers and ecosystems
  • “Educating the consumer” is end-of-pipe solution
  • Since 2008 the west adds more debt than GDP
  • Belgium gives a 4 billion subsidy / year to fossil fuel
  • TTIP & CETA are not seperate, they undo all the rest
  • 65% more emissions, 3 years in row new records

EESC can call EC to go for

  • Jobs and Planet agenda
  • 10 Revised Juncker Priorities
  • Accountability instead of responsability
  • First define sufficiency, then efficiency. Quota
  • Catch up with China on access to justice for NGOs
  • Get rid of GDP growth as a goal.
  • Goal: well-being for all within planetary limits
