1. Staff presented this material as an information item at the October 17, 2019 School Board meeting. 2. The Educational Specifications (Ed Specs) document was revised to clarify the difference between Planned Enrollment and Calculated Capacity (pages 21, 31, and 39).

1. Planning parameters are aligned with school, APS and DOE strategic initiatives 2. Program and capacity analysis for the following instructional programs inform facility requirements in these Ed Specs:

• 1. Quantity and size of individual spaces in the Ed Specs was determined using a variety of

input that included:

• a. Arlington Career Center and Department of Teaching and Learning leaders
• b. Guidelines from the Virginia Department of Education
• c. Comparable facilities provided at other APS high schools
• d. Current best design practices for similar schools/programs
• e. Lessons learned from recent projects
• 2. Space program assumes that undersized and/or inefficient spaces within the existing building

will be improved to reflect current requirements

• 3. Refinements to the space program will occur as part of the typical design process; which

includes detailed floor plan review by staff at Arlington Career Center and Department of Teaching and Learning

RECOMMENDATIONS

Staff recommend the School Board take the following actions:

• Approve the Arlington Career

Center Expansion Educational Specifications document dated November 6, 2019 attached to this presentation.

• Direct staff to provide an update
• n the Ed Specs (highlighting any

refinements) concurrent with the proposed Concept Design in March 2020.
