JBC publishes the whole story

  • JBC prides itself on providing all the experimental details,

all the key protocol descriptions, and all the data... so that a submitted manuscript can be critically reviewed and the resulting paper can be reproduced

  • JBC also holds published work to a high standard of data

presentation, in particular images, whether gels or micrographs.

JBC acts rapidly on manuscripts

  • The turn-around time from submission to first decision
  • n JBC manuscripts averages 21 days for regular papers,

and 13 for accelerated communications. This is one of the best in class...

  • JBC receives between 10 and 20 manuscripts per day...

which then get assigned to an Associate Editor, who then selects reviewers. Typically, these are chosen from your ranks.

  • We want you to help us maintain our reputation for

thorough, rigorous, and timely review of manuscripts.

JBC is on a mission...

JBC is on a mission to enhance its impact and its

  • effectiveness. We are describing this mission as having a

goal of facilitating scientific discovery. How?

  • Better communication of science: easier submission,

more facile reading

  • Enabling readers to more easily discover findings
  • Helping scientists share and manipulate data
  • Increasing reproducibility

EBMs carry out the critical review of manuscripts assigned to them; on average a given EBM is assigned 1 to 2 manuscript per month.

  • EBMs must act with stringency, fairness,

consistency, author-friendliness, and efficient turnover.

  • EBMs must be open to changes and enhancements

to our review process and stay informed about instructions to authors.

What is the role of an EBM?

slide-14
SLIDE 14

14

  • Flag papers that would be of interest to the broader

community (public interest): these may be included in bi-weekly emails, tweets, and other communications.

  • Communicate to the assigning AE any issues of concern

with a paper that should be examined by the Manager

  • f Data Policy.
  • Flag papers that would benefit from editing suggestions

to improve titles and abstracts (in house) or that need editing assistance from an outside service prior to review.
