CHILDCARE

  • Research-WIT/WCCC
  • Surveys Feb/March 2013
  • Focus Group May 2013
slide-63
SLIDE 63
  • Key findings
  • Car is dominant mode of transport.........
  • Over 90% of people drive because it’s more

convenient.

  • 25% of all car trips in Dungarvan (single

family occupancy) are for the sole purpose of dropping off or collecting children.

  • 70% believe it’s not too far to cycle to the

childcare service and 25% think it would be quicker.

  • 49% consider the cycling route to the service

to be safe. However, 63% do not have access to bicycles or the relevant cycling equipment to cycle to or from the childcare service.

  • Weather is a major deterrent ........... 80%

choosing not to cycle or walk when the weather is bad.

  • Improved Infrastructure, traffic calming and

the provision of cycling equipment were the most frequently cited factors by parents / guardians that would encourage them to engage in active travel.

  • Opportunities
  • Organise ‘walk to childcare’ days using a

single central meeting point.

  • Awareness raising campaign (newsletter,

social media, seminar etc.) for parents to address the health and developmental benefits

  • f active travel.
  • Provide infant seats and cycle training to

parents of children attending services already connected to the cycling infrastructure.
