EARLY COLLEGE CREDIT

  • DUAL CREDIT
  • Programs with signed agreements between the school districts and Elgin Community College – students

take college courses at ECC and earn both high school and college credit. Credit is earned while in high

  • school. Available to juniors and seniors.
  • ADVANCED PLACEMENT
  • High school students enroll in College Board’s Advance Placement courses and earn a qualifying score on

the AP exam. Official scores must be sent to the college. Credit is awarded after matriculation to college.

  • ARTICULATED CREDIT
  • Program with signed articulation agreements between the school districts and Elgin Community College.

Approved high school career technical courses are taught at the high school by HS faculty. Students who earn an A or B in the designated high school courses (and meet other certification criteria) can earn proficiency credit (no letter grade) upon graduation from high school and enrollment at ECC within 27 months.

  • DUAL ENROLLMENT
  • Qualified, individual high school students take college courses on their own – for college credit only (high

school credit may or may not be awarded). Credit is earned while in high school.

  • Earn both college credit and high school credit
  • Complete an Associate’s Degree! (Accelerate College – Junior Pathway)
  • Students learn the rigors of college work early. They are able to adjust study habits to

college work before they have to deal with the complete college experience

  • Saves students and parents money
  • Students can complete entry-level general education, elective, or career and technical

courses

  • Complete a College Success course (COL 101) and learn the skills that will help you be

successful in college

DUAL CREDIT: PART-TIME OPTIONS

CTE (TECH PREP)

Part-time Dual Credit program on ECC’s campus. Students are enrolled in a specific Career-Technical Education program (i.e. Automotive, Basic Nursing Assistant, Criminal Justice, etc.) and complete 2-3 courses each semester. Students can earn a total of 15 credits and earn academic certifications (if applicable).

  • Industry Certifications

MIDDLE COLLEGE

Part-time Dual Credit program on ECC’s campus. Students are eligible to enroll in foreign language courses each semester. Students can earn up to a total of 8 transferable credits. Classes are taught in the afternoon or evening during the week. Students can choose to take college-level courses in Chinese, Japanese, or Advanced Spanish.

DUAL CREDIT: FULL-TIME OPTION

ACCELERATE COLLEGE

  • Students in extra-curricular high school activities, will need to ensure they can commit to the

following schedule: Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

  • ECC’s academic calendar is different from high school calendar
  • The grades will result in a permanent college transcript
  • All parent communication will be managed by the high school
  • Students must follow all college policies and procedures (i.e. Code of Conduct)
  • Students are required to work closely with their high school counselor and ECC staff
  • Students will complete a rigorous college curriculum
  • Academic Plans will be unique to student’s intended major and institution
  • 1 Year Program – Courses are preselected by ECC and HS Districts
  • 2 Year Program – Courses are selected with the expertise of an ECC academic advisor
  • Students are responsible for textbooks and transportation

Junior Pathway: Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, or Fire Science & Safety

Students must meet the following requirements:

  • Unweighted 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and meet all course prerequisites
  • ECC minimum competencies
  • SAT scores or ECC Placement Tests
  • All other requirements as per the high school district
  • After ECC has confirmed the successful completion of all requirements, the high school will select

students and invite them to attend “Welcome Night” on March 7th at 5:30 p.m.

  • ECC will set up an appointment with an academic advisor.
  • Students will meet with an Academic Advisor to discuss course options after consulting graduation

requirements with their guidance counselor. Schedules will be reviewed by academic advisors periodically throughout the program.

  • Unless otherwise noted by the academic advisor (i.e. AP credit), students may be required to

complete at least one summer course in between year 1 and 2. Students will earn approximately 60- 65 credit hours.

Next Steps from ECC

Application Letter

  • Elgin Community College will mail a letter to indicate the application has been processed
  • Upon confirming testing and other requirements, guidance counselor will communicate the admission decision

directly to students Welcome Night and Student Orientation

  • After students have been accepted, they will receive an official invitation to attend a mandatory Welcome Night

event and Student Orientation. Parents are highly encouraged to attend “Welcome Night”. ECC Student Portal & Email

  • This will be the primary channel of communication. Schedules will be available through the student portal prior to

the start of the semester. Set-up instructions will provided at orientation. Bookstore & Support Services

  • Information about textbooks and campus support services will be available during the Welcome Night and

Student Orientation
