Understanding holiness changes how we see God

What did I learn about God from Isaiah?

When they see among them their children, the work of my hands, they will keep my name holy; they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One of Jacob, and will stand in awe of the God of Israel. Isaiah 29:23 God’s name is holy and acknowledging His holiness enhances our capacity to fully align ourselves with Him. We cannot stand in awe of Him until we recognize His holiness.

What I learned from Isaiah?

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted,

seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were

• flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and

the temple was filled with smoke.

What Isaiah saw? (Isaiah 6:1-4)

5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I

live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which

he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And

who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!

4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north - an immense

cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was human,

6 but each of them had four faces and four wings.

What Ezekiel saw? (Ezekiel 1:4-6)

19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved;

and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose.

20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would

rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures

stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

What Ezekiel saw? (Ezekiel 1:19-21)

28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was

the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking. (Ezekiel 1:28)

What Daniel saw? (Daniel 7:13-14)

27 I, Daniel, was worn out. I lay exhausted for several days. Then I got up

and went about the king's business. I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding. Daniel 8:27

2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures,

according to the word of the LORD given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. 3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. 4 I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed: “Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, ..” Daniel 9:2-4

10 A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11 He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the

words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.

12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that

you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.”

How Heaven Responded (Daniel 10:10-12)

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the

Worship shapes the human community in response to the living God.

8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with

eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “ ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, 'who was, and is, and is to come.”

9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who

sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
