Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Hongxu BI (Ivy) - Sunday, 26 November 2017, 9:21 PM During this Thursday's class, Darrell showed me how he "spies on" everything we did about this class with his special iSpace system. I want to share what I have been showed with all of you in this class! In Darrell's iSpace, there is a function that allows him to get a large amount of data and information about all classmates' actions in this class, which includes:

  • your login time, duration, IP address, and how many clicks you did each time
  • how many views you have on each section (i.e. Forums, Files, Glossary and etc. in iSpace)

and when is the latest view

  • every section, forum post, comments you have accessed in iSpace and when is your access

time

  • everything you have posted in iSpace and every edit you did

To get these information mentioned above, all Darrell needs to do is to type in your student ID number and then a vertical log containing all your (and only your) actions will be listed in front of

  • him. But do not worry, all the information here is exclusively about the professional communication
  • class. Only your acts in the iSpace of Professional Communication would be available to Darrell.

I was really impressed by the quantity and width of the information coverage. To be honest, I have always wondered how could Darrell pick out the posts and comments of each one of us from over 100 posts and give an appropriate individual grade according to everyone's performance. Now with this system, I bet the grading process will surely be a lot easier than I have imagined. Technology does make Darrell's life easier! ;)

In case the text-only description of Darrell's system is a little bit dry and boring, a few pictures of the system was also attached below. With these visuals, maybe you can get a more real picture of how "Darrell knows EVERYTHING" Hope these information is helpful to you! Here comes the pictures of the system! Sorry that I am a terrible photographer.

Have you read the book 1984 writing by George Orwell? "Darrell is watching you!" Actually I think this function is very useful and effective for teachers to know student's performance and their participation.

Before having this course, I didn't realize that we can post forums, check dictionaries on iSpace except submitting assignments and downloading PowerPoints. Forum is a good platform for both students and teachers to communicate in a more relax way. We can share our ideas and asking questions here. We should make full use of this platform. 97 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Zhuofei LU (Stephan) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:21 PM That is a fantastic statement that "Darrell is watching you!". :) 10 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Marissa FURNEY () - Thursday, 7 December 2017, 4:04 PM I have read 1984 before! Interesting comparison! 7 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Qiaorong CHEN (Carol) - Monday, 27 November 2017, 3:42 PM Now, I truly believe that Darrell can see everything we did on ispace. And it would be a prefect and fair way to get grade based on how hard we did. At the same time, I regret that I didn't spend more time on ispace of the Professional communication course. I hope it would not be too late. Thank you so much for your sharing. 65 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Zhuofei LU (Stephan) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:31 PM

Now I am trying to spend more time in replying the course forum topic. Because "Darrell knows everything!" He must know that we are lazy to spend our time in the ispace in the past so he ask us to read the topic "Darrell knows everything!" which wrote by my friend HongXu BI. I am so encouraged by this topic!:) 60 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Yingting YANG (Rinty) - Monday, 27 November 2017, 3:47 PM Impressive, Ivy! I did expect that Darrell could watch us on iSpace, but I cannot imagine that it can be so detailed, including our IP address, how many clicks each time we did and so on. That actually feels impressive, though it is a little bit creepy. What impressive here means that the technology now is well developing now. It could achieve the goal of doing all those things that Darrell could do on iSpace. Maybe in the future, there will be a lot more convenient online tools for people to use, that may save a lot time for people in a effective way. 104 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Nan ZHANG (Sophia) - Monday, 27 November 2017, 4:19 PM Amazing ! This is the power of technologies. Everything we do online is no long secret any more. If technologies like this are used in a proper way then it may be a good thing. I also believe that this is fair for students because it is a more objective way to show what they have done. 56 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Peiyao MA (Josephine) - Tuesday, 28 November 2017, 2:11 PM

Thant is...impressive. It's a little bit creepy because it feels like someone is spying you. But honestly, I think at least its a good way to ensure that the grading is fair. How much effort I invest

  • n it will determine how good the result I will have. By doing so, the teacher will know who is

diligent and hard-woking. 61 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Marissa FURNEY () - Thursday, 7 December 2017, 2:27 PM I think you meant to say: "That is...impressive." Not 'thant'. Also, you are missing the preposition 'on' in this sentence: "It's a little bit creepy because it feels like someone is spying [on] you." Most formal sentences do not start with 'But', 'And' or 'Or'. When talking to a friend, it would be fine, but here, you could re-write the sentence as: "...it feels like someone is spying [on] you, but honestly, I think..." Other than that, good work! :-) 80 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Zeyu FENG (Maxine) - Thursday, 7 December 2017, 10:26 PM I think I've just learn a new phrase "other than that"! I think I must hear it before, but I never see it wrrtten down. Talking of formal language, I wanna ask, when talking with friends, it can be quite awkward to make the messages sound too formal, can't it? For example, when I chat with my friends in Chinese, if they use too formal language, I'd feel they are not trying to be friendly. Seeing informal language use especially texting language or colloquial language really makes me feel relaxed and comfortable. So, do you have such experience when you are chatting with a non-native speaker of English? What langauge do you use? Formal or informal? 116 words

Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Hao XIE (Harrison) - Tuesday, 28 November 2017, 10:28 PM Yeah, that is incredible. Now I know why I got a low score on the project presentation course. But I do think this forum is a lot easier than that in the PP course. Honestly speaking, I hate the PP forum. You may write down everything here, about your thoughts, ideas, imaginations, anecdotes, etc. That makes the forum much more friendly-looking. In comparison, the PP forum is filled with questions, and the instructions are endlessly long, incredibly obscured. This course forum is one of the things I

  • like. I frequently visit forums actually, but not our course forums since they all require an VPN. I

love talking to friends and communicate with my fellow students, professors, TAs in a comfortable

  • environment. OK, I seem to go far away. Since everything is recorded here, the activities are easy to
  • track. So we should work hard, shouldn't we?

146 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Marissa FURNEY () - Thursday, 7 December 2017, 2:32 PM I can appreciate how honest you are in this post! This is feedback we can keep in mind when setting up forum posts and expectations. Small note, when you said "Ok, I seem to go far away", there is actually a single English word you could say instead. You could say, "Ok, I digress". Digress means to leave the main subject when talking or writing. I would recommend saying this next time! :-) 72 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Ranyang GAO (Jenny) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:17 PM One of the most impressive information I got today, to be honest, at first I don't quite understand why do we spend so much time on the ispace, now it seems that it is necessary because Darrell can actually see you! Now I'll worry about am I doing a great job on ispace and I really need to work harder on my glossary collecting I think. Anyway thanks for the information Ivy! 72 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply

Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Shihui LIAO (Sophi) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:17 PM I know that teacher can monitor students' activities in Ispace, but I don't know how detail it is. After seeing your explanation, I am surprised. How intelligent the Isapce is! I think what we did is

  • transparent. This makes me uncomfortable. However, it's not so bad, because in this way, can

teachers know what we have done about in the course and how much time we spent on study. It contributes to final grading and if we are confused about our grades, they can show us those details. It's fair. I think the function of Ispace is not bad by balancing its advantages and disadvantages. in addition, thanks for your sharing. Now, I know probably I need to pay more attention on the course. hope we can do better~ best wishes ! 131 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Qiong LIU (Kristin) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:18 PM Thanks for your information Ivy! Actually, I knew that each teacher for each course is available to see what the enrolled students have done on his or her Ispace before. But your information still useful for reminding me to perform as well as possible because Darrell knows EVERYTHING. The picture you posted towards glossary also reminds me to put new words on our Ispace. I would be in trouble if I forget this. By the way, I am still confused that how technology helps Darrell to grade over 100 posts more

  • simply. Doesn't Darrell still need to read the posts one by one and grade them?

Actually I have always thought that how could Darrell assess our performance in this course, because we did so many things in the class! Does he check every post we wrote or every comment we gave to others one by one? It must be a large amount of workload. Now, my question has been answered. Thanks you so much. I really didn’t realize that Darrell know so much information about what we did in this course. He even knows how many clicks we do for each section, really? This course is totally different from other courses that I have attended. It doesn’t have any rubrics, as far as I know, but it indeed has its own assessment method. Bacially, everything we post in the Ispace is part of our grades. I realized that I didn’t pay too much attention on scores in this course compared with other courses, I just participated in the activities instead of pursuing the goal of finishing all kinds of assignments. Students can really be engaged in the course and enjoy learning. It is really a good thing about this course. 194 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Qinghui CHEN (Sylvia) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:34 PM That's cool, Ivy. Thanks for your information. Actually, I think the forum is an effective communication tool for classroom interaction. Students could post what they’re interested or confused in. Also, other participants could reply and give some feedback to them, which quite useful for students to interact with each other and enhance the cooperation skill. Based on the forum, the lecturer could understand students’ performance and attitudes. He could have an overview about the difficulties or benefits that students met during the learning process. It’s significant for the lecturer to check students’ understanding and give feedback, which helps learners to increase the learning efficiency and improve the communication competence. On the other hand, I think ispace also has its limitation. The communication is not instant. Sometimes students cannot receive the feedback immediately. Overall, thanks for your sharing. That’s quite useful for us to know the function of ispace. 148 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!!

by Yueqi ZHANG (Rebecca) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:39 PM Thank you for sharing this information to us. Everything we did one the Ispace can be observed by Darrell. I was considering how can he assess our work, because we did lots of them on class. thank you for tell me the answer. 43 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Zeyu FENG (Maxine) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:47 PM What? Even how many clicks I did each time and how many views I have on each section?

  • Woooooooo. TMI! TOOOO much information, man! I think it can be a quite useful tool to track

students’ progress.Teachers can get to know whether their students are involving in the activities or

  • not. It can be a good way to assessing students' performance. It can be a great monitor if it is used

properly. I think those online shopping website owners also have access to their users’ information as well. I am quite worried about my privacy issues now. I often us my mobile phone to browse some online shopping stores. I hardly use my computer. I now realize why there were so many ads pop out in my explorer when I use my computer, even if I didn’t click into those websites. i think we should be careful when we use some websites, especially when the websites use cookies to gather users' information. 163 words Show parent | Edit | Split | Delete | Reply Re: Darrell knows EVERYTHING!!! by Jiashuo YAO (Arthur) - Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 1:44 PM After reading this post, I have to say the development of computer science increase educational level and efficient in many aspects. To be honest, I decided to upload words to dictionary just before the final, because uploading in each week is really troublesome. Now, I realized my opinion is a stupid idea. As a student, there is no doubt that this tech increase the study stress, however, it also improve our abilities in independent study. In addition, in this course, we have to improve our English step by step. 89 words

I am a TESL student and I am pretty sure that your writing is much better than many of my classmates! I think such good writing skill also reflects your overall English proficiency level, which must be advanced! You used lots of "chunks" such as "text-only description" and "with these visuals", which is awwwwesome. I just wanna ask, how did you improve your writing like this? Are you using some English media, such as Instagram,

  • r some blogs, or sitcoms? I bet your speaking is excellent as well.

I just feel confused our assignments for this course sometimes and I may look somebody else's post in the ispace to see whether I did them right. However, if Darrell can know everything, I will feel a little nervous when I look around randomly in the ispace. At the same time, we did so many posts for this course. I sometimes barely remember what I have done for it. With this amazing function of ispce for Darrell, I think he can know more about my work than I did. I totally agree with that this function can help teachers grade on us more easily. Techniques are changing the world! By the way, your description is quite clear and interesting. I do like your sharing about this! 133 words
