What classes do your children get to pick? • Music Rising 7 th grade students must select one music class. • – Students may select to continue with their 6 th grade performing music class (Band, Orchestra, Chorus). – Any student wanting to join a new performance class (Band, Orchestra, Chorus) next year needs to speak with the teacher of that class to make sure it will be a good fit. • Band- Mrs. Voois • Chorus- Mr. Hill • Orchestra- Mrs. Kelly – If a student does not select a performing music, then they select Classroom Music. – Any student who is not continuing with their performing music from this school year is asked to communicate their intention with the performing music teacher.

WORLD LANGUAGE READING OR • Pre-requisites of highly proficient to • Last formal year to advanced on 5 th and learn skill-based 6 th grade Reading reading strategies PSSAs and all As and and practice Bs in English and important Reading classes in comprehension grades 5 and 6 skills • French 1 and Spanish 1 • Taught on a high school level

  5. 7 th GRADE READING EXPECTATIONS Using grade level text a 7th grader is expected to:  Determine/Analyze Central Idea and/or Theme as it develops; supporting ideas; provide an objective summary  Acquire and use grade appropriate vocabulary and phrases  Evaluate author’s argument, reasoning, claims.  Provide evidence from the text and draw inferences based on what is stated in the text  Analyze nonfiction to determine the text structure and determine how it contributes to the meaning  Analyze two authors’ interpretations of same topic  Read and comprehend nonfiction/informational texts  Probe arguments in persuasive, informational, and literary text and observe how they build to a whole  Determine the point of view in a story and how it influences the plot

  6. 7 th GRADE WORLD LANGAUGE EXPECTATIONS  Be able to work independently when necessary.  Be accepting and respectful of multi-cultural diversity.  Be highly motivated and inquisitive about learning new things.  Be very organized and demonstrate good study habits.  Be willing to take risks and enjoy exploring and experimenting with new content.  Complete homework, class work, projects, and other assigned tasks on time.  Demonstrate accountability, dependability, and responsibility for learning with teacher as facilitator.  Demonstrate with consistency a positive work ethic and attitude.  Demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Exhibit self-advocacy skills and demonstrate good self-confidence.  Exhibit the ability to think critically and to ask probing questions.  Participate actively and enthusiastically in all classroom activities.  Work collaboratively with others when working in pairs or small groups.  Work diligently to achieve his/her goals.

OR WORLD LANGUAGE READING AND • Pre-requisites of highly WRITING FOR LIFE proficient to advanced on 6 th and 7 th grade Reading PSSAs • Last formal year to and all As and Bs in English learn skill-based and Reading classes in grades 6 and 7 reading strategies • French 1, German 1, Italian 1, and practice Latin 1 or Spanish 1 important • French 2 or Spanish 2 if you comprehension skills have taken the first year of the language and you are recommended to go to the next level

What classes do your children get to pick? • Music Rising 8 th grade students must select one music class. • – Students may select to continue with their 7 th grade performing music class (Band, Orchestra, Chorus). – If not currently (in 7 th grade) in a performing music, students select Classroom Music (a one marking period class in 8 th grade). • The other marking periods that get linked with Classroom Music are: Exploring Design in Your World (Art course), Design for the Real World (Technology Education course), and Teen Impact (Family and Consumer Science course) – Any student who is not continuing with their performing music from this school year is asked to communicate their intention with the performing music teacher. • Band- Mrs. Voois • Chorus- Mr. Hill • Orchestra- Mrs. Kelly

Academic Recommendations • Review the information contained in the Course Description Guides found on Fugett’s website • Ask your child’s teachers if you have questions regarding next year’s classes • There is still much more data (such as 6 th and 7 th grade PSSA results and final grades,) that will be looked at prior to schedules and levels being finalized.

Academic Recommendations • In the Parent Portal students and parents can only sign-up for the music, unified arts, and world language or reading classes. • A parent or student cannot change the recommended level for academic classes in Parent Portal; the parent must complete a Verification Override Form. • If a student is currently in Reading Plus and/or a learning support Reading Literacy class he/she should not sign-up for a world language or the Reading and Writing for Life course.

When can current 6 th and 7 th graders’ parents and guardians go online to the Parent Portal to view teachers’ recommendations and make their course selections? • From February 12 th through February 23 rd . • On Friday, February 9 th , Mr. Small will send a phone message and email to parents about the course selection window opening on Monday, February 12 th .
