Contest Process

  • Delivery to Gregory Feedlots: November 17-25, 2018
  • Acclimation period: approximately 2 weeks
  • Contest startup: weights, processing - implant, ultrasound, DNA, etc.
  • Mid-point activities: weights, ultrasound measurements, re-implant
  • Marketing & harvest
  • Final carcass and performance data, payout, contest scoring

  • Steers only

  • Purebred Hereford – recorded or registered by AHA, out of registered sire & dam
  • Commercial – must meet CHB live specifications

Contest Guidelines (cont.)

  • Birth date: 1/1/18 or after
  • Weight: 500-850 lbs.
  • Weaned 45 days, or more, prior to delivery
  • Vaccination Program: 2 rounds prior to delivery
  • Recommended guidelines posted to contest website
  • Zoetis SelectVAC WeanVAC protocol – www.selectvac.com

If possible, send a list of vaccinations and dates administered when cattle are delivered

  • Health papers required for interstate shipment – check with veterinarian

Additional Contest Information

  • Steers will be managed and marketed at the discretion of the feed yard
  • Scoring based on Retail Value Average Per Day on Feed calculation
  • All feed costs financed through the feedlot throughout the competition

 Payment will not be issued until after all steers in contest are harvested

  • Contest winners announced at AHA Annual Meeting Honorees Reception

Pre-Feedlot Best Practices (cont.)

  • Calves should be fed a balanced starter ration
  • Gradually increase grain rations
  • Animals should be weaned for 45 days prior to being shipped to feedlot
  • Animals should be individually ID’d as a reference point for future
