  1. Consultative Committee for Acoustics, Vibration and Ultrasound ‐ CCAUV Dr. Takashi USUDA on behalf of Prof. Dr Joaquín Valdés CCAUV President and CIPM member (UNSAM ‐ Argentina) 25 th meeting of the CGPM

  2. AUV in your daily life Ultrasound How much? Louis XIV Vibration Vibration 2

  3. Main Areas Consultative Committee for Comparison of pressure sensitivity using standard Acoustics …………………… Pa microphones [2 Hz – 40 kHz]: hearing, machinery and environmental noise Ultrasound ……………….. Comparison of ultrasonic power using hydrophones W [1 MHz – 20 MHz]: diagnostics and therapy, cleaning, sterilization and food industry Vibration & shock ….. Comparison of acceleration using accelerometers m/s 2 [0.1 Hz – 10 kHz]: car and aeronautic industry, health and safety issues Underwater acoustics . Comparison of ultrasonic power using hydrophones W [250 Hz – 500 kHz]: marine ‐ imaging, communication, mapping, climate studies Established in 1998 Consultative Committee for AUV / Prof. Dr Joaquín VALDES 3

  4. Areas of priority and potential Acoustics Keep pace with clinical practices, objective audiology, synergy with industry for low ‐ cost robust sensor systems Ultrasound Support High ‐ Intensity Ultrasound Therapy for clinical practice, alternative cancer therapy and drug administration, validated methods for acoustic material properties Vibration & shock Machine safety, inertia navigation and dynamic measurements, MEMS ‐ accelerometers and gyros Underwater acoustics Noise pollution of marine environment, support off ‐ shore applications at deeper water Consultative Committee for AUV / Prof. Dr Joaquín VALDES 4

  5. Interdisciplinary issues • Acoustic thermometry to determine the Boltzmann constant via the speed of sound • Materials metrology [1], Metrology and Testing [1] To use for materials metrology and material properties (e.g. elastographic imaging techniques) • Vibration and seismology Long term observation of plate tectonics, earthquake detection and alarm system • Ultrasound and chemistry, biochemistry To characterize liquid composition or evaluate protein solutions, molecular imaging, drug absorption • Ultrasound and ionizing radiation Concepts of radiation dosimetry in ultrasound environment [1] Metrologia 2010 47 Special issue: Materials metrology, Ed. S. Bennett and J. Valdés Consultative Committee for AUV / Prof. Dr Joaquín VALDES 5

  6. Stakeholder involvement • NMIs and DIs, themselves precursor to other stakeholders e.g. regulators for pharmaceutical, occupational, traffic, etc. • The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) • TC29: Electroacoustics • TC87: Ultrasonics • The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) • TC108: Mechanical vibration, shock and condition monitoring • TC43/SC3: Underwater acoustics Consultative Committee for AUV / Prof. Dr Joaquín VALDES 6

  7. Achievements 2011 ‐ 2014 MEMBERSHIP: KEBS (Kenya) obtained observer status • CCAUV strategy revised in 2012 following the BIPM time schedule • Consolidated planning of needed key comparisons • RMO TC Chairs invited to the CCAUV 2012 and 2013, and to selected WG • meetings 2 CCAUV comparison completed: • Ultrasonic power (pilot PTB) • Vibration acceleration (pilot PTB) • Launched 4 CCAUV comparisons: • Acoustics completed (pilot NPL) / standard microphone calibration • Ultrasound in progress (pilot NPL) / hydrophone calibration • Vibration completed (pilot PTB) / angular acceleration (supplementary comparison) • Vibration in progress (pilot NIM) / low frequency – acceleration complex sensitivity • Consultative Committee for AUV / Prof. Dr Joaquín VALDES 7

  8. Future Strategy • CCAUV strategy to be revised by 2017 • An analysis of impact cases will be carried out before the next meeting. • Feedback from the CCAUV meeting 2013: • The CCAUV strategic document provides a good basis for planning on a local scale and for the search for funding ; • Review of the CIPM ‐ MRA from the CCAUV perspective • Close contact with industries, regulators Consultative Committee for AUV / Prof. Dr Joaquín VALDES 8

  9. Thank you

  10. Prof. Dr Joaquín Valdés CCAUV President 2000 ‐ 2014 Dr. Penelope Allisy ‐ Roberts Executive Secretary of the CCAUV 1998 ‐ 2010 Dr. Susanne PICARD Executive Secretary of the CCAUV 2010 ‐

  11. Thank you
