Victoria’s Great Outdoors

  • The Victoria’s Great Outdoors program is a $105.6 million investment by the Victorian Government into better forests,

parks, campgrounds, caravan parks, tracks and outdoor facilities.

  • The Great Outdoors package will help more Victorians, from all walks of life, get out and explore the great outdoors and

feel the health benefits of spending time in nature.

  • We’re making it easier to get into nature through: cheaper camping, better facilities, new and upgraded campgrounds,

caravan parks, tracks and trails, upgraded 4WD tracks and a new coastal park on Victoria’s Bass Coast.

Yallock-Bulluk Marine and Coastal Park

  • As part of the $105.6 million commitment to ‘Victoria’s Great Outdoors’ initiative, the Victorian

Government is creating the Yallock-Bulluk Marine and Coastal Park.

  • Combines existing parks and reserves along 40kms of coast from San Remo to Inverloch.

Project Background

  • Includes extending and upgrading the George Bass

Coastal Walk.

  • The project has been allocated $19.6 million to:
  • create the park
  • extend the trail
  • construct associated infrastructure
  • acquire land that will add strategic and

environmental value to the park.

Bill update and process

  • The Yallock-Bulluk Marine and Coastal Park will be

established under the National Parks Act (1975).

  • This makes the protection and management of

these coastal reserves consistent along the Bass Coast, and for some areas will mean greater environmental protection.

  • Overall, the new park will safeguard this coastline

for future generations.

is declared in legislation

June/July 2019 November 2019 2020

  • The park boundaries were informed by feedback from community and stakeholder consultation in 2019

and will be formally established through legislation.

  • Due to coronavirus (COVID-19) and delays in parliament, this is now expected to happen late in 2020.
  • More land may be added to the park in the future.

Stakeholder and community engagement findings to date

2019 engagement

Overall

  • protection of environmental values
  • protection of cultural heritage and
  • providing greater visitor access (e.g.

cycling and shared trails)

  • Appetite for community engagement
  • There was also strong interest in the

proposed extension of the George Bass Coastal Walk.

Plans for the trail:

  • Environmental protection
  • Link and flow of the trail
  • Signage
  • Catering for shared-use and all

abilities

  • Share stories and information on

the trail

  • Consider Aboriginal cultural

heritage

  • June 2019- Roundtable session with key representatives
  • late July 2019- five Open House sessions (200 attendees)
  • ngoing stakeholder meetings with partners and

key stakeholders

Access and Infrastructure Plan

slide-17
SLIDE 17

17

Access and Infrastructure Plan

  • It is a report that will outline the connections (access)

and physical features (infrastructure) needed along the San Remo to Inverloch trail

  • Looks at infrastructure such as crossing points along

the trail, a possible camping site and car parking. It also considers access: how people will get to places along the trail such as between trail and the car park, and the trail and the beach

  • The objective is to make the trail a continuous and

accessible journey.

What is it?

slide-18
SLIDE 18

18

Access and Infrastructure Plan

  • The Access and

Infrastructure Plan is specifically about the trail between San Remo and Inverloch

  • A range of technical

studies will provide information about the natural influences on the trail and how best to address them, and manage impact

Tender and consultant appointment

  • A consultant will undertake the technical studies and research

to develop the Access and Infrastructure Plan

  • They were selected using a public tender that was open to the

market

  • There were three tender applications that met the

requirements, and the successful applicant was Hassell who have been awarded the contract

  • The Hassell team have considerable and broad experience

with projects similar to this

  • They have now been formally appointed and are getting things

moving with:

  • an initial base information review,
  • internal team meetings with Parks Victoria and DELWP

and information sharing, and

  • desktop site appraisal and investigations.

Who will undertake the work?
