The History of Codeine
According to author Lance Scott Walker, Codeine developed in Houston around the 1960s when blues musicians would take Robitussin and cut it with beer. In the 1980s and 1990s the formula changed from Robitussin to using codeine promethazine cough syrup, and mixing the drink with lemon-lime soda and Jolly Ranchers.
