  2. Monday 27 th April 2020 Session 2a – Slides 2-11 What is a biome and where in the world are they found? Key Vocabulary : Biome Key Knowledge: Flora  Biomes are located around the world Fauna Tundra  Biomes are large regions of the world that because of a similar climate, have similar Boreal Forest plants and animals Deciduous Forest  The same biomes can be found within Tropical Rainforest different continents Grassland  There is a clear link between climate zones Desert and biomes Chaparral Savannah

  3. Unit 4 Session 2 Task: Complete the Knowledge Quiz on page 8

  4. Unit 4 Session 2 Answers

  5. Your five weeks of learning will look like this: This half term, all of your 1 How does climate differ around the world? Geography learning will be working towards you being able to answer this question: 2 What is a biome and where in the world are they? What is a biome, how are they What do the flora and fauna of each biome have 3 different from one in common? another and how How have flora and fauna adapted to the biomes 4 have living things of Europe? adapted for survival within them? What challenges do humans face in the biomes of 5 Europe? 6 How have humans adapted the biomes of Europe?

  6. Discussion Do you think the same plants and animals can be found worldwide? How might the climate zone influence the types of plants and animals?

  7. What are biomes? This is the name of our unit, so it’s a very important word to remember… The simplest way to describe biomes is: ‘Biomes are areas of the world that share a similar climate and because of that climate they are home to similar plants and animals . Those plants and animals have adapted to live in there’. So the same biome can be found in different parts of the world but those parts of the world have a similar climate and therefore similar plants and animals. Click on the link to read and watch more about biomes: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z849q6f/articles/zvsp92p Task: Complete the definition box in the table for ‘Biome’ on page 9 .

  8. What do we mean by flora and fauna? The word flora is used to describe • the plant life found in a particular place. Example: “The flora of a desert biome are plants that need little or no water.” • The word fauna is used to describe the animal life found in a particular place. Example: “The fauna of a rainforest biome is reptiles, mammals and birds.” Task: Complete the definitions for ‘flora’ and ‘fauna’ in the table on page 9.

  9. What are the different biomes? There are many different views on the different biomes of the world and where they are located but we are going to use and learn about the following: 1) Tropical Rainforest 6) Polar 2) Deciduous Forest 7) Savannah 3) Boreal Forest 8) Chaparral 4) Tundra 9) Desert 5) Grassland

  10. Where are the different biomes located? Task: Use these clues below to identify the colour of each biome on the map. Complete the ‘Biome’ column in the table on page 10. The tundra biome can be found in the very • north of North America • The desert biome can be found across a large area of northern Africa The deciduous forest biome covers all of the United Kingdom • • The tropical rainforest biome is found along the equator • The boreal forests are only found in the northern hemisphere The savannah biome can be found in the north of South America • • The chaparral biome can be found in places like Greece

  11. Have you identified the biomes correctly? Colour Biome Climate Zone(s) Answers… Polar Desert Polar Complete Tundra this column Boreal Forest if you Tropical Rainforest haven’t already. Deciduous Forest Grassland Mediterranean, Temperate, Arid Savannah Desert Chaparral Task: Use last week’s learning (on page 4) to identify which climate zone(s) match with each biome. There could be more than 1 answer. Complete the ‘Climate Zone’ column in the table on page 10.

  12. Tuesday 28 th April 2020 Session 2b – Slides 12-28 What is a biome and where in the world are they found? Key Vocabulary : Biome Key Knowledge: Flora  Biomes are located around the world Fauna Tundra  Biomes are large regions of the world that because of a similar climate, have similar Boreal Forest plants and animals Deciduous Forest  The same biomes can be found within Tropical Rainforest different continents Grassland  There is a clear link between climate zones Desert and biomes Chaparral Savannah

  13. Discussion Task Can you remember the names of the different biomes? What do you think it might look like in each of them?

  14. Tropical Rainforest

  15. Savannah

  16. Desert

  17. Chaparral

  18. Deciduous Forest

  19. Grassland

  20. Boreal Forest

  21. Tundra

  22. Why are some biomes found in more than one climate zone? There is a clear link between biomes and climate zones but some biomes are located in more than one climate zone. This can be confusing but biomes can also be influenced by the type of soil, how close they are to the sea or how close they are to the centre of a large land mass and also by how high or low the level of the land is.

  23. Which biomes are found in each continent? Task: Use your knowledge of continents and the atlas on the next page to work out which biomes are found in each continent. Complete your answers in full sentences on page 11. Example: Europe The biomes which can be found in Europe are…. Keywords: Tropical rainforest Deciduous forest Boreal forest Tundra Grassland Polar Savannah Chaparral Desert

  24. This slide will help you complete page 11. Keywords: Tropical rainforest Deciduous forest Boreal forest Tundra Grassland Polar Savannah Chaparral Desert

  25. Task: Use pictures from slides 14-21 to match up the biome pictures with their name on page 12 (Please try to use a ruler).

  26. Answers…

  27. Task: “ What is the link between climate zones and biomes?” – Page 13 Paragraph 1- What is a climate zone and what is a biome? Paragraph 2- What is the link between the climate zones and a biome? What is similar and different? Paragraph 3- Can you give examples of any biomes and climate zones that are similar and different? This task is optional. It would be lovely to see some writing though to show the link though.

  28. Discuss with your child: What is a biome and where in the world are they found?
