Its purpose was to provide aid, assistance and disaster relief to citizens in time of emergency. Today, the organisation runs on the same principle with a focus on effectively aiding the full time emergency services as and when required.”

  3. Civil Defence • Established in 1951 • Civil Defence is a volunteer based organization that supports the front line emergency services. We also assist our local communities. Civil Defence has 4,500 volunteer members throughout Ireland. • It is a world wide organisation – 60 countries, every continent • Largest volunteer organisation in the country • 140 volunteer members in Clare • Many of our members are employed by An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service, the Fire & Rescue Service and the HSE • Qualifications received are both nationally & internationally recognized • The Civil Defence has it’s national training college in Roscrea and a purpose built training centre in the Phoenix Park in Dublin

Clare Civil Defence Volunteer Members • All members are fully insured • All members are Garda vetted • All members are issued with a uniform and full PPE • All members must complete a Manual Handling & Cardiac First Responder (CFR) course • All members are trained to the highest & most up to date standards & certification available in whatever discipline they choose to pursue • Members must have an acceptable level of fitness • Members must be 18 years of age or over on application to join • There are 5 members with over 40 years service and one member will be receiving his 50 year service medal early next year

Clare Civil Defence Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2016 • Largest operation ever run by Clare Civil Defence • Over 100 volunteers with assistance from personnel from 4 different counties • Over 3,500 work hours covered in the eight day period • GPS Radio tracking system used to locate medical crews – first time ever for an event of this size • AMPDS system employed for the event • Call response times of 60 seconds
