  2. City Facilities Pilot Programs: • LAX • City Hall

  3. LAX Food Waste Collection • Selected 4 Concessions to represent the different food service establishments (FSE) at the airport • Goal: Create a collection program model for each FSE type before expanding to all terminals • Pilot: Collection started on Earth Day 4/22/17

  4. Civic Center • Focus on City Hall • Also conducted site visits of the LA Mall and the City Hall South Farmers Market • Pilot: Collection started on Food Day LA Event 10/24/17

  5. Participating Food Service Establishments (FSEs) LAX: City Hall: • Homeboy Diner Terminal 8 • Fast food (Carl’s Jr.) • Coffee shop (Coffee Bean) • Sit down restaurant (Engine Co. 28) Terminal 7 • VIP lounge (United)

  6. Site Visits & Training • Conducted site visits prior to implementation to identify bin locations and to get buy-in from FSE managers • Trained managers and kitchen staff using a waste sorting game ➢ LAX: 103 FSE staff ➢ City Hall: 9 FSE staff and 180 City employees & the public

  7. Collection Containers • Primary Collection Container: 26-gallon green bins (32-gallon bin with a raised bottom) • Slim Jims • 2-gallon and 7-gallon containers

Green Bin Service • LAX and City Facilities Recycling Program (CFRP) staff collect food waste from FSEs, Monday-Friday • Food waste is transported to CLARTS (transfer station) • From CLARTS, the food waste is sent to an anaerobic digestion facility (CR&R) for processing into renewable natural gas
