The Kyrie

 Greek for “Lord”. This is the short title for the Kyrie Eleison.  Greek for “Have mercy”  Named for the first words of the Ordinary. Using the first words of a thing is

a common naming protocol in history (Hebrew books of the Bible, hymns).

 It is three times repeated to recall the Trinity.  O.T. ds,x,( Hesed (Ps. 27:7; 30:10; 33:18, 22;  N.T. evle,hson (Matthew 9:27ff.; 15:22ff; 17:15ff; 20:30ff; [9:13, 12:7])

The Gloria in excelsis (Deo)

 Called the Greater Gloria in distinction from the Gloria Patri (removed in

Advent and Lent)

 Latin for “Glory (to God) in the Highest” (pronounced: egg shell seas)  Named for the first words of the Ordinary. Using the first words of a thing is

a common naming protocol in history.
