What Makes a Wellness Program Great?

The most successful programs have “baked-in” a culture of well-being within their core values and have leadership who believe in and support the collective effort.

Implementing Great Wellness Programs

  • Can belong to anyone (e.g., HR, a Committee, etc.)
  • Offer social & environmental supports
  • Are designed with employee’s personal goals in mind
  • Offer incentives if employees demonstrate positive

responses to rewards

  • Engage leaders & staff at all levels of the organization
  • Link employees to health resources across the

community

  • Start with a baseline & monitor progress over time

Measureable Program Results

  • Rate of absenteeism
  • Cost of absenteeism
  • Rate of turnover
  • Cost of group insurance
  • Accident / incident rates
  • Participation in program

events

Successful Workplace Health Programs

  • One Size Does Not Fit All

– LL Bean has been recognized for its Health Programs and credits the success of its programs in the distinct program design

  • Create a Culture Not a Program

– Lincoln Industries based in Nebraska creates a culture of health within its hiring process.

  • Learn From Mistakes

– At USAA, for example, removing all the unhealthy foods from the company’s cafeterias resulted in some employees buying their lunches elsewhere.
