INTRODUCTION

  • Tuvalu formerly known as Ellice Island during the Colonial

period GEIC (Gilbert and Ellice Island Colony)

  • 1976 separate from the Colony and gain poli:cal

Independence on 1st October 1978 from Great Britain

  • Tuvalu is a chain of nine atolls and coral island with a land

area of 26 square kilometer

  • Popula:on of 11,636 and is classified as Polynesian in the

South Pacific

  • Na:ve language Tuvaluan similar to Samoan, English and

Kiriba:

  • We use Australian currency and depend much on our

fishing license revenue

  • Tuvalu Na:onal Library and Archives establish on 1st

September 1978

CURRENT STATUS OF THE TUVALU NATIONAL LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES

  • Building is very old and fragile
  • Holds the memory collec:on of Tuvalu during the colonial

period

  • Birth, Marriage, Death, Divorce, Wills, Land Owners,

Government administra:ve records, Colonial Separa:on records, Genealogical records, Maps, Video, Audio recordings to name a few

  • An ac:ve member of PARBICA and ICA
  • Done EAP pilot project in digi:za:on and microfilming

fragile records 2005-2007

  • At the moment engaging in a project called “Appraising and

preserva:on of Tuvalu public records.

  • The project is done to solve the backlog in a shipping

container
