Our strategies include: • Develop and implement programs for faculty and trainees at all stages in their careers - from early careers to senior leadership - that promote academic and career development. •Provide information, education and resources to enhance faculty effectiveness. •Provide support and education regarding the promotion process. •Provide counseling, advice and support.

Programs • 91 programs with over 3,000 faculty and fellows in attendance : – Academic Career Advancement, CV Narrative, Negotiation, Difficult Conversations, Presentation Skills, Grant Writing, Mentoring, Scholarly Writing, Careers in Industry, Women Faculty Leadership, “Meet and Greets”, Orientations, Mastering your Media Message, Balancing Parenthood and Your Career, etc.

Consultations • 265 individuals visited one of the offices this past year (330 visits) – 60% were faculty, the other 40% were research/clinical fellows, graduate student, residents and other staff – Vast majority was for career, grant funding and promotion advice – 156 individuals were seen by CFD Directors/staff – 109 individuals were seen by others relating to difficult conversation scenarios, life coaching, and grant funding

  12. ORCD Mission To addresses the specific needs of the MGH research faculty and trainees. Our strategies include: • Develop programs to advance the career development pathways of research faculty in an academic medical center environment. •Strengthen the career guidance and mentoring offered to trainees. • Enhance communication within the research community •Provide counseling, advice and support

  13. ORCD One-on-one meetings • Advice on career advancement and promotion • Critique of CVs and grant applications • Dealing with loss of lab or individual funding • Conflict resolution (peer and supervisor/PI issues) • Mock interviews for job applications

ORCD Real Life Case Study 1 Problem: advancing to next career stage Intervention: advice about dealing with “difficult” PI Result: The meeting with you tremendously encouraged me to face and deal with the issues. No one else whom I consulted with during the past 8 months gave me as accurate assessment and invaluable suggestions as you provided.

ORCD Real Life Case Study 2 Problem: no calls for interview for job applications Intervention: critique of CV and letter Result: “ Thanks so much for having a career development session with me yesterday. To tell you the truth, I was a bit lost and depressed after getting no positive feedback from my job application, but now I have a clear idea about what to work on”

  16. ORCD Real Life Case Study 3 Problem: too junior to write RO1 Intervention: discussed mentor/co-investigator compromise, followed by grant writing advice Result: RO1 submitted and funded “Thank you very much for your time and very helpful strategy advice”

ORCD Real Life Case Study 4 Problem: promotion/recognition of status Intervention: suggested a negotiation strategy with “PI/director” Result: “ He agreed that I put together a program and there should be a better title (such as director of XXXX) for me in his center. Thanks again for the time you spent with me and for your advice.”

ORCD Real Life Case Study 5 Problem: paper rejected (but author thought he could answer the criticisms) Intervention: encouraged writing to editor with rebuttal and helped draft letter Result: “From rejected, to reconsidered, to accepted. I have never believed there is life after death... until now.”

  19. ORCD Real Life Case Study 6 Problem: individual faced imminent and sudden job loss due to funding crisis Intervention: talked directly to Unit Chief Result: person still had to leave – we cannot work miracles – but received advice on job search

  22. GSD Goals • Serve the basic & academic needs of students • Provide programs, services, and resources • Create a sense of community • Enhance the experience of students at MGH • Attract more graduate students to MGH • Establish relationships with area schools

GSD Accomplishments • Nuts and Bolts: – Identified graduate student constituency – Created registration process for all graduate students. • Created sense of Community/Networking: – Local sub communities (CNY and Simches) – Social night activities – Joint GSD and ORCD Social Events (e.g. Barbeque)
