The meeting with you tremendously encouraged me to face and deal with the issues. No one else whom I consulted with during the past 8 months gave me as accurate assessment and invaluable suggestions as you provided.
ORCD Real Life Case Study 2
Problem: no calls for interview for job applications Intervention: critique of CV and letter Result: “Thanks so much for having a career development
session with me yesterday. To tell you the truth, I was a bit lost and depressed after getting no positive feedback from my job application, but now I have a clear idea about what to work on”
ORCD Real Life Case Study 3
Problem: too junior to write RO1 Intervention: discussed mentor/co-investigator compromise, followed by grant writing advice Result: RO1 submitted and funded
“Thank you very much for your time and very helpful strategy advice”
ORCD Real Life Case Study 4
Problem: promotion/recognition of status Intervention: suggested a negotiation strategy with “PI/director” Result:
“He agreed that I put together a program and there should be a better title (such as director of XXXX) for me in his center. Thanks again for the time you spent with me and for your advice.”
ORCD Real Life Case Study 5
Problem: paper rejected (but author thought he could answer the criticisms) Intervention: encouraged writing to editor with rebuttal and helped draft letter Result:
“From rejected, to reconsidered, to accepted. I have never believed there is life after death... until now.”
ORCD Real Life Case Study 6
Problem: individual faced imminent and sudden job loss due to funding crisis Intervention: talked directly to Unit Chief Result: person still had to leave – we cannot work miracles – but received advice on job search
