GARETH MORGAN AWARD

Gareth is a well-respected Argyle Alumni student athlete. He was an honor roll student in the first French Immersion graduating class at Argyle. He was a member of the 1989 Argyle SR Boys soccer team that won the BC High School Provincial Championships. He was named Argyle Athlete of the Year in his graduating year. He was selected to the Canadian U19 soccer team and played in the 1991 Pan-Am Games in Cuba. He was drafted by the Vancouver 86ers (precursors to the Vancouver Whitecaps) and played on their reserve squad. Gareth was also one

  • f British Columbia’s top track and field athletes, winning the BC Pentathlon Championship and holding records in

the 80 metre hurdles as a preteen. Even with all of his accomplishments, Gareth was totally without ego and remained a modest and gentle soul. He was a devout Christian and cared deeply for his fellow human beings, He was a Big Brother in North Vancouver and sponsored a child in India through Dalit Freedom Network. He took time during his leave from flying positions to participate in mission trips with the North Shore Alliance Church in North Vancouver to build homes for destitute people in Ensenada, Mexico. He participated in mission work in an orphanage in Pemba, Mozambique with the Iris Global ministries. Gareth touched people all over the world with his humanity, compassion, and deep spiritual beliefs and is sorely missed by all who knew him. This award will be given to a soccer player who best represents Gareth’s attributes: model student athlete, academic achievement, athleticism, teamwork and giving time to benefit others.

Ken Moore was a well-respected coach on the North Shore, who coached a number of teams at the school and community levels. Ken started coaching in 1995, and was always known as an easy going, friendly, and well loved coach on the North Shore. He coached Baseball, Lacrosse, Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer. In 2005 Ken was the Head Coach of the Argyle Pipers Junior Soccer Team and led the team to the Vancouver District Championships where they won the coveted District Title. Ken believed in putting the players first, and believed in sportsmanship, fair play, and player development over winning. For this reason, this award is given to an athlete who has shown strong sportsmanship. This athlete continually encourages and supports other athletes. Above all this is an athlete who strives to obtain their best, while demonstrating the essentials of sportsmanship and fair play.
