Our Journey of Recruiting Internationally Educated Nurses as Continuing Care Assistants in Nova Scotia – some best practices and challenges

slide-48
SLIDE 48

What we have done to date

  • Recruitment of internationally

educated nurses (IENs) already in Canada as international students to our residences throughout Nova Scotia

  • Hiring of Immigration

Consultant and additional support

  • Settlement – airport pick-up,

accommodation, local settlement agencies

  • Assistance with permanent

residence applications for our “hard-to-fill” positions – most qualify for either the Atlantic Immigration Pilot or the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (Skilled Worker or Occupations in Demand)

  • Education on Immigration

Compliance

slide-49
SLIDE 49

Best Practices

  • Leverage local resources –

Halifax and Cape Breton Partnership for example

  • Reach out to Nova Scotia

Office of Immigration for tricky scenarios

  • Educating management

teams and employees on compliance, risks, benefits

  • Ensure your HR team knows

what they can advise on and what they can’t

  • Settlement assistance – don’t

underestimate the importance

  • f settlement and utilizing

local settlement agencies

slide-50
SLIDE 50

Challenges

  • Shorter work permits =

shorter timeframe to apply for PR and not always eligible for provincial health care

  • Large amount of

administrative work

  • Infrastructure in smaller

communities – accommodation and transportation

  • Pressure for AIPP – not

interested in any other pathways

  • Timing of becoming a

permanent resident and transitioning to become an LPN or RN
