Impact Threshold Likelihood of remaining a gateway
Implement gateway elements that expand the unique identity of Virginia Commonwealth University at key locations.
1. Ensure transitions between surrounding neighborhoods and campus are clearly indicated. 2. Create features using VCU-specific materials and design that present a clear distinction when entering campus. a. Incorporate VCU logos, colors, and materials appropriate for the location in gateway designs. b. Place iconic pylons at appropriate locations. 3. Take advantage of infill development sites at key gateway locations by designing structures that serve as anchors for the university.
Design architectural and landscape elements that reflect the characteristics of the neighborhoods and city districts surrounding campus.
1. Design a building for the Broad and Belvidere gateway that compliments the Institute of Contemporary Art building and creates ties to the City of Richmond Arts District. 2. Create cohesion between the architectural elements of the Fan District and proposed gateway design at the western edge of campus.
Ensure safe and effective multimodal pathways at gateway sites.
1. Slow traffic by implementing traffic-calming measures at appropriate locations. a. Widen crosswalks and increase crossing times at intersections with high-traffic flow. b. Use textural materials and visual elements within intersections to slow traffic.
Design VCU gateways that are aesthetically pleasing for people to move through or linger in for daily university life or special events.
a. Implement landscape improvements i. Trees, groundcover, and shrubs ii. Lighting, fencing, and walls iii. Water features b. Incorporate public art i. Display artwork within gateway designs. ii. Murals, sculptures, and architecture
Create multi-use destinations through placemaking. 1. Expand potential uses at existing open spaces.
2. Use infill development opportunities to create interactive public spaces.
3.
Leverage existing activity nodes to expand interaction at gateway sites.
