How is Public Health Engaged ? • Local public health agencies are engaging with indigenous partners to develop local strategies • Public Health Planning and Liaison office of the Population and Public Health branch is facilitating dialogue • Trilateral First Nations Health Senior Officials Committee (TFNHSOC) provides the interface with three partners: Federal, FN and Province • Public Health Working Group co-chaired by Elizabeth Walker and Linda Ogilvie (COO)

  4. The Public Health Working Group • Created in 2012 • Focus of work is on both system and local level changes/improvements to facilitate better coordination of public health service delivery for FN communities • One size does not fit all • Two pilots for northern remote FN communities: Weeneebayko Area Health Authority(WAHA) and Sioux Lookout FN Health Authority (SLFNHA)

  5. Cultural Competency Modules • The most important goal is to provide an occasion and vehicle to build relationships with FN leadership on PH issues • COO is leading this work • Online modules with a relationship building component • Recent pilot with Fort Williams and Thunder Bay identified gaps that are being addressed

  6. Review of the OPHS • The Public Health Working Group has spent some preliminary time discussing whether there may be some ways to strengthen and clarify the OPHS mandate to boards of health • Process to include the engagement of indigenous leadership • PHWG will facilitate

  7. Peterborough Public Health • Board of Health has established a First Nations committee, led by FN board members • Urban indigenous leaders have been invited to join • Provide a forum for FN partners • Advise the board on how to strengthen relationships and become a better ally • Oversee local response to TRC Calls to Action
