C o n t r e l e c Company History Contrelec Limited was founded in 2010 (incorporated 2010), but the history of this company extends back to the early 1980s when Managing Director, Gary Barnes, began a 15-year career working at Hill Graham Controls Limited in High Wycombe: starting as an Electronics Lab Technician, progressing to Field Service Engineering and finally as Engineering Manager. Hill Graham Controls was the UK branch of Ross Hill Controls Corporation in the USA, and when Ross Hill was acquired by NOV Hill Graham was forced to relinquish its interest in SCR Systems for the drilling industry but still provided parts and services as a sub-supplier to NOV. Hill Graham Controls then concentrated on high-power, current-sourced AC drives before this business was sold to Ansoldo Industria, eventually passing on to ASI Robicon before being acquired by Siemens, who closed down the operation. Contrelec was originally founded to provide engineering consultancy to companies and resellers requiring expertise in Ross Hill and Hill Graham type SCR systems, often taking full engineering control of projects for third party companies. In January of 2016 Contrelec decided to market products and services directly to end-users and their agents. Successful projects include: a complete SCR system replacement for a jack-up, modifications and additions to existing SCR switchboards to add extra generating capacity, Mud Pump Field Supply replacements, complete new-build SCR Systems for offshore and land rigs and a full-size containerised SCR Training SImulator. Parts are either sourced from UK, USA or EU manufacturers, or manufactured in the UK by Contrelec. Parts are high quality, fully inspected or tested and offered at competetive prices. The age of some rigs means that parts have become obsolete. Using our engineering expertise and experience we are able to offer viable alternative solutions, or re-engineer parts. C o n t r e l e c Repairs and Calibration Contrelec has developed a complete set of testing and diagnostic tools and procedures for fault-finding and repairing any Ross Hill or Hill Graham Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Our AC and DC Module Simulators allow AC and DC Control Modules to be fully tested under controlled conditions. We can repair modules which incorporate special Hill Graham modifications, and even provide replacement spares. Current limits for DC Modules can be accurately calibrated and adjusted. C o n t r e l e c Preventative Maintenance Initiatives Contrelec has developed a number of preventative maintenance initiatives to ensure equipment performs at optimum levels and to reduce down-time caused by equipment failures or inadequate spares back-up. One such initiative is our Module Health Check program which ensures a rig’s AC and DC Control Modules are correctly calibrated and working perfectly, including spares. The program is designed to ensure there is no risk to operations. Contrelec also has a number of upgrade packages for older rigs, including Generator Exciter upgrades, Surge Suppression improvements and Mud Pump Field Supply upgrades.
