“The Triangle” redevelopment

  • Phase 1

– triangle cleared of tall vegetation and turfed to improve traffic safety – posts installed to prevent parking

  • Phase 2

– ideas for use sought through BVN and Bugle in November 2017 – PC sub-committee has considered these and developed idea for an installation – this is a progress update

Ideas put forward

  • “Village sign”
  • Signposts
  • Sculptures
  • Wind turbine
  • Definitely not a flagpole!
  • Planting

– generally compatible with other suggestions and will consider once other works are complete

Sub-committee considerations

  • What we were looking for

– to capture the essence of Braunston – something different - not just another boring village sign – challenging – worth a second (third) look – thought provoking – a discussion point – eye catching – not too dominated by the canal aspects

  • We realise we can’t show everything

Sub-committee considerations

  • Points discussed

– balance between rural village and canal aspects – avoiding straplines that sound like a tourist brochure – costs – carbon footprint – potential for misuse or damage – safety – pedestrians and road users (visibility) – commissioned a local designer to assist – name – “The Village Compass” seems to be favourite

Initial design

  • Design concept

– circular installation comprising five metal layers, so it looks very different from different angles – supported on a post – probably oak – circular base in the form of a compass – metal layers in stainless steel, with centre layer made from Cor-Ten steel, which will weather to a rust colour – not all obvious – the more you look the more you see

Initial design

  • Following pictures show design concept

– at this stage, note this is based on a not-to-scale cardboard mock-up and sketches only – overall dimensions are 1.2m (4 feet) diameter metal structure on a 2.4m (8 feet) high post – designs to be applied using a plasma cutter – already discussed with a supplier and viewed examples, this will achieve a good level of detail – more detailed design is still to be done

Design concept – side 1

  • Side 1 reflects the geography and agricultural

aspects of Braunston

– our location and altitude – ridge and furrow fields harking back to days before the Inclosure Acts – sheep and dog highlighting the important wool trade – the iconic All Saints Church visible from miles around reflecting the prosperity of the parish based on wool – the peregrines that have become village residents – nature supported by the built environment – to be raised to form extra part layer in the structure

Design concept – side 2

  • Side 2 reflects the canal history of Braunston

– the pumping station and its chimney emphasising that the industrial revolution didn’t pass Braunston by – Braunston’s position at the centre of a number of canal routes – with miles and locks – a swan representing the value of the canals for nature – may be raised to form extra part layer – on both sides text passes below the top layer

Risk assessment

  • Risk

– injury through walking into steel structural parts – danger to pedestrians from road traffic while viewing – obstruction to visibility for drivers at junctions – structural stability (steel section weight ~100kg)

May 2019 Braunston Parish Meeting 13

  • Mitigation

– post 2.4m high – advised by suppliers – consider orientation (N-S or E-W) – possibility of interpretation panels on Green across roads from triangle – design to retain clear view across triangle – take advice on post spec and installation

Next steps

  • Detailed design and costing
  • Planning permission application
  • Grant applications
  • Constructive comments and suggestions

welcome

– to clerk@braunstonpc.org – we may not be able to adopt them all, as ideas may be contradictory or we may not be able to afford them – however, we will give all responses full consideration
