We Listened.

In Favor 63% Opposed 37%

In response to the 2014 proposal, the majority were in favor of a new building, but found the size and price unrealistic for our community.

Too large Too expensive

Follow up surveys and focus groups confirmed the need for a new facility.

Barrier-free accessibility More space for books and programs

The new library building has been designed to achieve the goals presented by the community and has the capacity to evolve as technology and community needs change.

Historic References, Modern Amenitites

  • 1. SINGLE STORY

Until a library becomes large enough to make it impractical, it is easier and more efficient to staff and use a building on one level.

  • 2. SHELTER AND VISIBILITY

With lots of people coming and going, libraries frequently offer a generous entry with protection from the rain, and lots of visibility to activities within to encourage passers-by to make a visit.

  • 3. "BREAK THE BOX"

A simple shift along the building centerline allows for indoor-outdoor sheltered space to boost program capacity for popular summer programs, while high windows add light when winter gets gray.

SCALE STREET-FRIENDLY

Appropriately scaled to neighboring properties Placement respects “downtown feel”, touching the street edge with visible activity and shelter for pedestrians

The Saugatuck-Douglas District Library is committed to providing a facility that both “belongs” and maximizes our ability to provide high-quality, modern library service.
