  10. FOUR OF THE TEN STREAMS ENTERING BIG BALD DO SO IN THE NORTHWEST BAY. MAY WANT TO CONSIDER THIS AS A TEST SITE FOR 2018 TO MONITOR RUNOFF.

  11. Phosphorus Tester Needed Please consider volunteering as our Phosphorus Tester Duty Details • Test Phosphorus & Water Clarity • one location - mid-lake • once per month - May to October - starting 2018 • must have own boat • testing supplies received in mail from Lake Partner Program • mail samples to Lake Partner Program Training & Support • training is provided • procedures are posted to Kawartha Lake Stewards Association website • Kawartha Lake Stewards & Lake Partner Program provide support Importance of monitoring Phosphorus levels & water clarity • we need to track the health of our lake and take action before serious problems arise • high phosphorus levels increase algae and weed growth

  12. Phosphorus and Secchi Depth Results Phosphorus and Secchi Depth testing is done from one location in the centre of the lake and results are available in the spring of the following year. Phosphorus levels exceeding 20 parts per billion (ppb) are of concern since at that point algae growth accelerates. We had some particularly high results in 2016. This may have been due to the hot summer, but we can all do our part to reduce phosphorus in the lake. Prevention of algae blooms, particularly blue-green algae, is critical if we are to have safe water for drinking and swimming. A wide variety of factors are linked to the formation of blooms, but the most significant ones are increased nutrient input to lakes, and a number of specific meteorological conditions such as high water temperature, low rainfall/precipitation and reduced wind speeds.

  13. Shoreline Gardens Project Shoreline Workshop Demonstration Site Congratulations to Sue Flanagan who won our draw for the demonstration site . Fifty-two people attended the Shoreline Gardens Workshop at the Buckhorn Community Centre led by. Leora Berman, The Land Between .
