Consumables Returning items (from 2016 eliminations): ● 3⁄4” PVC pipe and fittings ● Bicycle inner tube ● Bicycle brake cable Items removed (2017 eliminations): ● 1⁄4” polypropylene sheet ● 1⁄2” diameter aluminum rod ● Flat angle bracket Swapped: ● Changed 1⁄2” PVC pipe & fittings to 1⁄2” EMT conduit Other Changes ● No specific callout for plywood grade, recommend hubs use BC or luan grade

  11. Generic Rules Changes Added 1.3.1.3 item 6 ● 6. No package materials may be used (materials that come with kit items to protect or store them before use). Examples: The plastic film that covers the adhesive portion on the hook and loop strip; cardboard roll at the center of a tape roll. Modified 3.6 item 3 3. No external devices may be connected to the joystick during match play unless ● specifically provided by BEST competition personnel (things such as an auxiliary power supply or a channel shifting dongle).

Scoresheets ● Packets include score sheets covering 4 categories of the BEST Award ○ Project Engineering Notebook, ○ Marketing Presentation, ○ Team Exhibit and Interviews, and Spirit and Sportsmanship ○ ● And the 4 standard (mandatory) awards ○ Founders Award for Creative Design Award, ○ Most Robust Machine Award, Software Design and Simulation Award, and ○ ○ Simulink Design Award (awarded by South’s BEST)

  19. Team Demographics Form ● Copy can be found in kickoff folders ● Fill it out TWICE (once before kickoff, once for Game Day) ● Must submit at robot compliance on Game Day in order to compete

Engineering Notebook (ENB) ● Must be received by 11:59 PM on Tuesday, October 31 ● Submitted as an electronic PDF file attachment ● Send to georgiabestrobotics@gmail.com ○ NO last-minute hand-carrying of a physical document ○ NO extra credit for a great binder ○ If we cannot read (a valid PDF), we cannot judge ● Review score sheet for evaluation criteria ○ Requirements are given in the policies document ● No longer includes team demographics ● Could be your ticket to the wildcard round ● Required for everyone to compete on Game Day!

Al George Award ● Submit an electrical schematic of robot ○ Must include a wiring diagram ○ May include mechanical CAD drawing showing unique routing of wiring ● Must include an electrical schematic in Engineering Notebook ○ single page or multiple pages ○ count toward the total of 40 pages of additional information ● Judges will examine the team’s robot and compare the schematic with the final execution of the robot’s wiring ● Key points of examination will include ○ elegance of design ○ simplicity and neatness of the wiring ○ creative use of the kit components

  22. Glenn Allen Award ● Recognizes a mentor who makes a difference in the lives of a team ● Nominations are an essay (or essays) by team member(s) explaining why they feel their mentor should be chosen ● All essays must be submitted by 11:59pm on Friday, October 27, via e-mail to georgiabestrobotics@gmail.com .

  23. Tom Collins Creative Use of Material Award ● new and innovative way to use the materials given in the kits ● use should be innovative and intentional ● explain how the material use contributed to their team’s success on the field

Marketing Presentation ● Presentations will be made in private sessions to judges ● 4-8 students make the presentation ● No adult participation (observers TBD) ● No assumptions about A/V equipment ● 5-minute setup, 12-minute presentation, 5-minute Q&A, 3-minute breakdown Teams not requiring set-up or break-down time may utilize ○ that time for their presentation (for a total presentation time of up to 20 minutes) ● Storyboard and Practice, Practice, Practice!

  25. Team Exhibits and Interviews ● Judges will visit team exhibits in morning and early afternoon ● Do not underestimate the impact of a creative exhibit and a knowledgeable student staff ● Review score sheet for evaluation criteria

Spirit and Sportsmanship ● Judges will discreetly visit each team booth and pit ● Judges will observe competition ● This IS NOT a competition for the loudest team or spectators ● This IS the place where adult participation with the robot is penalized ● These are points that you have, until you lose them ● Review score sheet for evaluation criteria

Simulink Design Award Awarded to one team in each of the 4 BEST regions ● Team that best applies the Simulink Support Package for ○ VEX based on the specified judging criteria and their robot’s performance in the competition Any team using MathWorks MATLAB/Simulink to design ○ their software (i.e., robot program) is eligible Make your submission directly to BEST, following their rules ● http://www.bestinc.org/simulink_award/form.php Team does not have to advance to be eligible ●
