IS LONDON PSYCHOSIS AWARE?

A review of existing research found limited insight into Londoner’s level of awareness, knowledge or attitudes to psychosis - specifically about when and how to seek help. An omnibus survey was developed to measure public perceptions in London:

  • The understanding of psychosis (or relevant proxies, such as

serious mental illness)

  • The kinds of behaviours which might prompt people to seek help
  • The actions which people might take.

METHODOLOGY

  • Conducted by TNS LondonBus, an internet omnibus able to survey

a representative sample of Londoners.

  • Online self-completion questionnaire between 18 and 22 June 2015.
  • A sample of 1,002 residents of London boroughs aged 16+ were

interviewed (n=1,002). The sample was weighted to represent the adult population of London.

Q2 – SYMPTOMS AND BEHAVIORS WHICH MIGHT PROMPT PEOPLE TO SEEK HELP

The symptoms and behaviours suggested were:

– Someone who becomes more withdrawn, socially isolated, stops caring for

themselves

– Someone who believes that they are being watched or that people are plotting

against them

– Someone who hears voices or sees things or people who are not there – Someone who shows extreme emotional outbursts or mood swings – Someone who is experiencing delusions, or disturbing fantasies about the world

KEY CONCLUSIONS

  • Overall, strong ‘in principle’ support from London residents

for the introduction for a referral to treatment target and the key aims of the EIP programme

  • (Understandably) “psychosis” as a term and diagnosis is not

well-understood by the public

  • However, the public in London is in relatively good shape

– to spot the symptoms and behaviours which should prompt them to seek help – With a good understanding of the right agencies to turn to. Headlines

slide-22
SLIDE 22

www.eip.london

KEY CONCLUSIONS

  • Agreement with key policy priorities: ‘parity of esteem’, early intervention,

recovery

  • We should consider the preferred routes through which people seek help, to

ensure that systems, communication and referral routes are aligned

  • Within the health service, preferred routes are primary care, mental health

services and NHS 111, and respondents to this survey said that voluntary agencies are as likely to be contacted NHS services

  • Could we use data on original point of referrals to London mental health

providers and/or EIP services to ‘triangulate’ what people said with what happens in reality, with a view to designing systems which can route people seeking help effectively?

Messages for the mental health system

slide-23
SLIDE 23

www.eip.london

KEY CONCLUSIONS

  • We should segment the London public. Clear differences

between: – Men and women – Older and younger people (possible mid-thirties transition) – Young people aged 16-24, who both hold different views and are in the age cohort most likely to experience first episode psychosis

  • Leading with the term “psychosis” is not likely to be effective -

the focus should be on symptoms/behaviours and next steps to take. Messages for public-facing communication

slide-24
SLIDE 24

www.eip.london

KEY CONCLUSIONS

  • Information about when and how they should seek help should

be clear and definitive - especially about ‘first ports of call’, ideally standardised across London

  • An important objective of public guidance should be to raise the

general level of understanding and confidence: – Positive messages about outcomes and recovery – Reassurance that an effective range of services is available Messages for public-facing communication (cont)
