Led by forward-thinking and environmentally- responsible stakeholders, the construction industry is experiencing a continual shift towards ever-higher standards of sustainability and Ashfield Building Group is positioned at the forefront of this ongoing evolution. Ashfield’s expertise in sustainable building enables us to work on projects which exemplify the environmental performance standards which the wider sector should aspire to

  • achieve. One such example can be found at

Church Lane in Chapel Allerton, where we are building a residential development which has received Silver Standard Certification from the Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB). Ashfield Building Group is ensuring that the property is built to the requirements of the design by Leeds Environmental Design Association (LEDA). This includes a complete thermal envelope, with continuous air-tight and wind-tight layers, and construction which eliminates thermal bridging to prevent the transfer of heat between the interior and exterior. The air-tight design will significantly improve the moisture performance of walls and prevent heat loss caused by leaks as well as increasing comfort through the elimination

  • f cooling drafts.

Ashfield’s Air-Tight Construction Sets Environmental Standards

One of the key parameters of AECB Standard for our eco house project was to achieve a 1.5 ach-1@50 Pa air tightness result. Ashfield helped to deliver an excellent result which represents outstanding air tightness performance and very low

  • emissions. It was my dream to achieve a score of below 1, so to get to 0.84

ach-1@50Pa is a great achievement. We also scored 0.95 m3/(m2.hr) @50Pa which is exceptionally good in relation to the standards set out in the Building Regulations. Congratulations to the team at Ashfield for finishing with a flourish.

This residential refurbishment and extension project in Knaresborough typifies the kind

  • f prestigious development which Ashfield

Group are renowned for undertaking. Posing a range of technical challenges which few contractors are equipped to handle, this complex project is exactly the kind of challenge which Ashfield Group relish. The development is now complete, and Ashfield has delivered an exceptional end result in keeping with the property’s stunning riverside setting. Located on banks of the picturesque River Nidd, one of the most sought-after spots in Yorkshire’s celebrated ‘Golden Triangle’ region, this substantial detached home was remodelled by Ashfield based on a design by Richard Eves Architects. The comprehensive scheme involved the demolition of two existing structures and the creation of a double-storey extension to the rear elevation, comprising en suite bathroom on the first floor and garden room below, as well as the formation of a new entrance in the area of the existing utility room. Ashfield also carried out the installation of new windows and doors, roofing works and interior refurbishments including M&E, plastering and structural alterations. The property has been enhanced with new finishes, fixtures and fittings, including a new energy-efficient boiler, upgrading of the existing central heating system and under-floor heating in the all-new kitchen. External works include landscaping, drainage, foundations and groundworks. The project required significant work with steels in a physically restrictive environment. Working

  • n the staircase and roofing was managed in

line with the requirements of Working at Height

  • Regulations. Alterations to the structure of the

house - in particular the removal of sections

  • f wall at both ground and first floor levels -

involved significant temporary works to maintain support and stability. Demolitions were carefully planned and sequenced to maintain the stability

  • f retained structures at all times and to control

risks associated with dust and falling debris.

We are pleased to have worked with the Ashfield Building Group on this exciting project and with the way that they addressed the exacting technical challenges presented by both the design and the location of the site. Working closely with the client, their interior design consultants and the Ashfield Building Group has achieved a comprehensive redevelopment of the house that responds and connects it to its wonderful riverside setting.
