  • Innovation not previously discussed
  • Ease of use without slowing down playability
  • Compatible with Basic or Master game
  • Applicable to both F-T-F & Solo Play
  • Enhance realism
  • Correct existing shortfalls
  • First-hand knowledge of effectiveness
  • No “intellectual proprietary rights”
  • Formula(s) exist in public domain

  • Fumble Frequency Number (FFN)
  • Brainchild of APBA Football legend – Howard

Ahlskog

  • Paul Vickers – mathematician
  • Background
  • Rocky Bleier’s 1980 card
  • No fumbles during 1979 season
  • APBA card has two full fumble numbers (33 & 34)
  • Rocky was on Howard’s F-T-F team
  • Two FFN categories
  • Non-Fumblers (Receives a “N” rating)
  • The fumblers (players with at least one fumble, are

assigned a FFN dice roll number)

SLIDE 4
  • Overview (How to use)
  • “N” rated players
  • If fumble number(s) exist on card
  • QBs: 13, 33, & 34 for “P” column
  • QBs: 14, 33, & 34 for “R” column
  • All other players: 13, 14, 33, & 34
  • Ignore fumble but use play result
  • Yardage gained or lost
  • “FFN Rated” players
  • Fumble number occurs (13, 14, 33, & 34)
  • Determine yardage lost or gained
  • Consult player’s FFN number and roll dice
  • If result is same or less than FFN number there is NO

fumble

  • If it’s higher, a fumble occurred.

SLIDE 5
  • Find the number of fumbles the player had

and divide by the number of “chances”

  • All rushes, receptions, pass attempts, kickoff

returns, punt returns, fumble recovery runs & interceptions

  • Divide that number by assigned fumble

numbers on the player’s card

  • Multiply that answer by 1296
  • Subtract that result from 36
  • Answer will be some number less than 36
  • If takes you to zero or beyond, award “F” rating
  • “F” rating is automatic fumble
  • Convert to APBA style dice roll
  • 1 = 11, 2 = 12, 3 =13, etc.

  • Play results 13, 14, 33 & 34
  • Only numbers used as fumble numbers

when counting on a player’s card

  • These numbers always carry the potential
  • f a fumble even if boards do NOT indicate
  • Use PR 33
  • Roll against FFN rating for fumbles
  • ccurring from penalties (PR 35 & 36)
  • Player’s discretion for Rare Plays (Master)
  • Receiver’s FFN rating is based off the

fumble numbers on the QBs card

  • Some cards will have two ratings (i.e. 24/43)
  • First rating is for the “run” (player’s card)
  • Second rating is for “pass” (QB’s card)
slide-9
SLIDE 9
  • All-purpose Running Backs
  • Involved in rushes, pass attempts, run-

backs and receiving

  • APBA frequently uses all three columns for all-

purpose backs

  • Use the highest number of fumble numbers found in

any one column
