AP English Language and Composition
■ Credit: 1 Unit; GPA bump ■ Prerequisites: English Grade 10 ■ Students participating in Advanced Placement classes are expected to take the College Board Exam, in addition to fulfilling all the requirements of the course. ■ No guarantee of College Credit.
DE 111 and 112: Composition
■ Credit: 1 Unit (also transferable college credit hours (6) with a grade of 70 or better each semester); GPA bump ■ Note: Fee required; Students must pass entrance exam. ■ Attendance policy and grade requirement ■ This course is a Germanna Community College (GCC) course taught in high school. ■ In accordance with GCC requirements, 80% of the student’s grade will come from writing assignments. ■ Credits typically transfer to all Virginia Community Colleges and most colleges.
AP Language and Composition
■ In this course, students will write about a variety of subjects, with emphasis on expository, analytical, narrative, and argumentative forms. ■ Additionally, through careful reading and critical analysis, students will examine the rhetorical strategies and stylistic choices made by writers. ■ Students will learn to read sources carefully, synthesize material from texts in their own compositions, and cite sources.
DE 111 and 112: Composition
■ Focuses on rhetorical modes (compare/contrast, literary analysis, personal narrative, critique, research writing) and literary study. ■ Reading primarily comes from selections of literature, Selections include novels, essays, short stories, drama and poetry. ■ Through the writing process, students will refine topics; develop and support ideas; investigate, evaluate, and incorporate appropriate resources; edit for effective style and usage; and determine appropriate approaches for a variety of contexts, audiences, and purposes.

■ Analyze works of fiction, short stories, short excerpts of novels, poetry, and drama ■ Close reading and in-depth literary analysis of the text and composition ■ Explore literary forms & terms ■ Read & write frequently. More time is spent reading than writing. ■ Timed Writes and Multiple Choice practice throughout the year to prepare for the AP Exam. ■ Research Paper ■ Choice Text analysis ■ Socratic Seminars
DE 243 and 244: British Literature
■ Survey class: Course is meant to set the basic foundation for more specific British Literature studies. ■ Time span will cover the Middle Ages (Anglo-Saxon- pretty much everything before 1600) through current day. We will cover basic history of each time period in order to understand the function of literature in society during each time. ■ Most readings will be done at home initially, then we will discuss the reading in the following class. – Time/motivation to read from home is a must as is the ability to participate and, at times, lead class or group discussions. ■ There will be several smaller writing assignments and one to two larger writing assignments per
writing prompts that will ask students to show close and critical reading. – Completion of all writing assignments is critical as they make up the bulk of the grade.
■ Rigorous, college-level courses that require maturity, commitment, industriousness, self- motivation, and the ability to work independently. ■ Take the Honor Code very seriously. ■ Utilize Socratic seminars and emphasize class discussion. ■ Average reading per week 50-150 pages depending on the text, and doing ing the e reading ading matter ers! ■ Minimum 15-20 pages formal writing produced each semester (approx. 3 formal essays per quarter) ■ Require familiarity with MLA format. ■ Introduce students to APA style writing. ■ Work on a college application essay with students. *Note: e: If your writing “needs work,” take General or Advanced English 11/12.
