 Dress is the first thing an employer sees when greeting you!  Will dressing properly get you the job? NO, but it will:

 Give you a competitive edge  Provide a positive first impression!

Should you be judged by what you wear? PERHAPS NOT THE REALITY:

 You ARE judged  More than 70% of your first impression is what people see.  The way you dress is the single biggest nonverbal communication you make about yourself.

Grooming

Women

 Hair should be away from your face and neatly cut and styled.  Wear daytime, natural-looking makeup-no heavy eyeliner or glittery shadows.  Nails should be clean and manicured; avoid overly long fingernails and nail art.  Lip color and nail polish should not be too trendy or bright  Perfume should be avoided-the employer may be allergic to it!

Men

 Have your hair neatly trimmed, including facial hair.  Heavy cologne or other overpowering scents should be avoided.  Nails should be clean and neat.

HOW SHOULD I DRESS?

 Conservative is ALWAYS the safest route  BUT – do some investigation of the employer

 What you wear should make you look as though you FIT IN with the organization.  If you overdress or under dress, the employer may feel that you don’t care enough about the job!  Call the Human Resources offices and ask  Visit the company’s office and observe the attire current employees are wearing  Make sure you are not there on a “casual day”!

 Make sure you have:  Clean and polished conservative dress shoe  Well-groomed hairstyle  Cleaned and trimmed fingernails  No or minimal cologne or perfume  If you have any visible body parts pierced or tattooed:

 Remove all piercings and cover all tattoos if possible

 Lean towards the conservative side of style  Avoid loud colors and printed fabrics/crazy patterns  Make sure your clothes are neatly pressed  Well-brushed teeth and fresh breath  No gum, candy, or other objects in your mouth  Minimal jewelry  No body odor

 Sweater/shirt (avoid sleeveless) and skirt/pants – dark colors nothing low-cut or too short (no more than one inch above the knee OR  Dress (avoid sleeveless or sun dress)-simple pattern  Suit (dark color)

 Avoid wearing tight clothing  Shoes should be low-heeled  Make-up should be minimal
