Green Technologies and Green Economy

  • There can be no green economy without green technologies and technological

innovation.

  • Most African countries have so many hopes and aspirations on a transitioning to a

green economy, but no country seems to have yet achieved that transformation.

  • Is the green economy destined to be an aspiration for a better future, or could green

technologies be the key to unlock this transition?

  • Technologies existing in Africa are both foreign technology and domestic

technology/ knowhow. The foreign components Africa’s technologies are derived mainly from China, and to a lesser extent from India.

  • Foreign technology needs to be better adapted to African requirements and African

technology needs to be updated. Technical cooperation should be based on this factor.

SOME FACTORS AFFECTING THE REALIZATION OF GREEN TECHNOLOGIES IN AFRICA

Energy Cost and unreliable power supply Energy costs are a significant cost factor for many industries. The main reason for this is that the system of innovation for energy efficiency has not been fully developed. Unfavorable Business Climate Unfavourable Business Climate, and lack of technical competence on the part of potential adopters are the two most important barriers to the adoption of Renewable Energy as perceived by the majority of respondents in the two countries High Initial Cost of set up High initial setup costs and high cost of finance are the most important barriers to the adoption of EE measures.
