NDM PLAN 1995 • In 1991 the Government through the NDMO office put up a proposal to develop a National Disaster Management Plan to replace the old and outdated EMSEC Manual • The Plan incorporates disaster experiences of the past, and recommendations of ideas after series of four disaster management seminars convened in 1991 to examine & review EMSEC Manual and make draft replacement documents

  3. NDMO ACT 1998 • The Government managed to adopt the first Fiji NDM Act 1998 approved in parliament after 19 years from NDMO establishment (1979-1998) • This NDM Act 1998 was formulated from the NDM Plan 1995 ( after 3 years) • The NDM Act 1998 is currently in use

NDMO FUNCTIONS & ROLES • Implement policies laid down by the Council and Cabinet • Advise National Disaster Controller, and the Council on disaster related matters • Initiate formulation of policies for development of disaster management in the country • Arrange council meeting and provide secretariat support and follow up • Deal with disaster management issue at national level

  9. NDMO FUNCTIONS & ROLES • Initiate and coordinate preparation of rehabilitation plans after national disaster • Coordinate disaster management training, education and awareness • Other functions required by council from time to time

  10. NDMO DRM PROGRAMS • Ongoing training and awareness programs at all level • Annual National Disaster Awareness Week Program • Installation of Flood Early Warning System for major rivers e.g. Navua, Rewa, Sigatoka, Nadi and Ba • Installation of Tsunami Early Warning System
