International Scholars

  • Non-resident?

A nonresident alien usually is subject to U.S. income tax only on U.S. source

  • income. Payments for research or study in the United States made by the

United States, a non-corporate U.S. resident, or a domestic corporation, are from U.S. sources. Generally, if you did not receive any income from U.S. Sources, you are not required to file a U.S. tax return; however, if you are a Nonresident Alien who is present in the U.S. under an F, J, M or Q immigration status, you are required to file Form 8843 (Statement for Exempt Individuals), regardless of whether or not you have received any income.

Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (PDF) by due date. An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay. You may be subject to a late payment penalty on any tax not paid by the original due date of your return.

  • ITIN # - Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

An ITIN number is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) not the Social Security

  • Administration. IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are

required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain, a Social Security Number from the Social Security Administration. ITINs are for federal tax reporting purposes only.
