Requirements for field sites at each location

• 1. Central field experiments (800-1000m2):
• soil treatments (biochar, compost etc.)
• controlled irrigation
• testing of crop (vegetables-cereals) / variety responses
• field replicates (n = 3)
• lysimeters & resin boxes
• water treatment technology
• composting
• gas fluxes
• 2. Farmers fields (n = 5-10)
• plot size > 40 m2
• soil treatments
• lysimeters & resin boxes (selected sites)
• conventional crops (& varieties?)
• individual irrigation practice

1. Available size > 500 m2 2. Location within urban-periurban area 3. Known land owner with secured title 4. Secure location to reduce risk of theft and disturbance 5. Availability of nearby wastewater for irrigation 6. Flat topography 7. Upland location, no floodplain 8. Minimum distance to next buildings or trees: 20 m 9. Homogeneous present and past land use

• 10. Soil depth > 100 cm, sandy texture
• 11. No stagnic or gleyic poperties
• 12. Good accessibility for frequent sampling

1. Available plot > 50 m2 (?) 2. Location within urban-periurban area 3. Known land owner with title 4. Willingness and interest in cooperating 5. Wastewater irrigation 6. Flat topography 7. Upland location, no floodplain 8. Soil depth > 100 cm, sandy to loamy texture 9. No stagnic or gleyic poperties (water logging, groundwater > 100 cm)

• 10. Good accessibility for frequent sampling
• 11. Variability of cropping practices
