Sati/satipaṭṭhāna in Buddhism (sati = that which is remembered; upaṭṭhāna = attendance)
Sati is the first factor of the Seven Factors of Enlightenment. Satipaṭṭhāna or “correct" or "right" mindfulness is the seventh element
– Contemplation of the body – Contemplation of feeling – Contemplation of consciousness – Contemplation of mind-objects (the dharmas / dhammas)

Shunryu Suzuki, a Soto Zen monk and teacher, arrived in San Francisco and began to teach classes about Buddhism.
1960’s
Influx of refugees from Tibet, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia
1963
Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thích Quảng Đức, burned himself to death in ritual protest.
1965
Philip Kapleau published The Three Pillars of Zen and founded the Rochester Zen Center. Jon Kabat- Zinn met Philip Kapleau and then went on to study with Buddhist teachers like Thích Nhất Hạnh.
1966
Thích Nhất Hạnh meets with Martin Luther King,
him to publicly denounce the Vietnam War.
1976
Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche began giving teachings about Shambhala Buddhism. Sharon Salzberg founded the Insight Meditation Society.
1979
Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the Stress Reduction Clinic, adapting Buddhist mindfulness for stress reduction and scientific research.
1970’s
American sympathy for the “Tibetan Cause” grew as Chinese rule over Tibet solidified.
