  • Be careful what you post – once you post something online it can

potentially come back to haunt you. Use the built in sharing controls for status updates and other posts to limit access to the intended audience.

  • Be careful what you click – Even if all of your controls are set properly,

clicking malicious links and installing malware can not only wreck your computer system, but it can affect your privacy and online safety as well.

  • Log out of Facebook – Facebook has been known to track user activity
  • n other websites, so logout when you are not using Facebook. Also,

staying logged in can make it easier for your account to be hacked if you login from shared computers.

  • Anti-virus software – install a reputable security software application and

keep it updated.

1 Anytime, anywhere and anonymous: cyberbullying can take place at any time and can happen anywhere. Cyberbullying can happen when children are in their personal safe space, like at home. The person cyberbullying may never be in the same physical space as their target and may attempt to appear anonymous. 2 Large audience and a rapid reach: the difficultly in controlling electronically circulated messages, pictures or videos means the scale and scope of cyberbullying can be greater than other forms of bullying. 3 “It’s just a joke!” Some instances of cyberbullying can be

  • unintentional. It can be the result of not thinking, for example something sent

as a joke may be deeply upsetting or offensive to the recipient. 4 Evidence trail: many cyberbullying incidents can themselves act as

  • evidence. A trail of evidence can be gathered from online and mobile

communications.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?

Although bullying is not a specific criminal

  • ffence in UK law, there are laws that can

apply in terms of harassing or threatening

  • behaviour. Some cyberbullying actions can

be criminal offences under a range of different laws including the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, Malicious Communications Act 1988, section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 and the Public Order Act 1986.

WhatApps now securely encrypts every single message, call, picture, video

You should receive a message within your chats if you are using the latest version of the app (which is required) to let you know the change has been implemented for you.

it’s looking like it might be a safer idea to use a more secure messaging app, like Telegram, a very popular alternative. And now that WhatsApp has been identified as a high-priority target for hackers, it might not be worth the risk.
