Welcome AA #1451 Participants

Participants in this Academy will be able to…

➢ assign evidence to components of the Danielson Framework (2013) in Domains 1 and 4 with a high degree of accuracy. ➢ provide constructive and supportive feedback to teachers based on evidence from Domains 1 and 4. ➢ control for bias when evaluating teachers in Domains 1 and 4. ➢ conduct effective pre/post conferences that utilize evidence from the evaluation rubric in a way that delivers constructive and supportive feedback, controls for bias, gives teachers the opportunity to plan instruction and demonstrate professional responsibility in order to improve student learning.

How Bias Can Color Your Objectivity

  • Read the article, The Observable Bias: A Crisis in

Educational Leadership found in your Participant Packet (P1-P4)

  • Discuss the article as team
  • In what ways does this article challenge your thinking

about “observable bias/”

  • What can you do to decrease your “observable bias?”
  • In order to decrease observable bias in your district, what
  • ne or two components from Domain 1 or 4 should be

discussed at your next administrative meeting

  • Be prepared to share with the large group

8

Activity: A Closer look at Domain 1 Components

  • With your team, review the information regarding the component assigned by your presenter

and…

9

When directed, conduct a “gallery walk” reviewing each component and adding to the charts as appropriate. Component 1 _____ Evidence (i.e., artifacts,

  • bservations, etc.)

Unsatisfactory Needs Improvement Proficient Excellent

Step #1: visualize, brainstorm , and document at least 2 forms of potential evidence related to your assigned

  • component. Start with the PROFICIENT column.

Step #3: for each example of evidence brainstorm and document what you would expect this evidence to look like if practice was considered UNSATISFACTORY. Step #2: for each example of evidence brainstorm and document what you would expect this evidence to look like if practice was considered EXCELLENT. Step#4: finally, brainstorm and document what would be considered PROFICIENT and NEEDS IMPROVEMENT.

Creating Pre-observation Conference Prompts

  • Now that you’ve had a chance to discuss what evidence of

Domain 1 might look like, let’s plan for a pre-observation conference by creating probing questions…

  • What standard questions would you establish to facilitate a pre-

conference? Refer to Domain 1 Components and their Critical Attributes as a guide as well as the Guide to Probing Questions (P5- P7). (Think beyond the questions on your current pre-observation form used in your district.)

  • What artifacts would you expect teachers to share in the pre-

conference?

  • As a team, record your ideas on the Domain 1 Evidence Collection Plan

located in your Activity Packet (A1).

10

Practice: Observe/Critique Pre-observation Conference

  • Review Teacher Lesson Plan (P8-P11)and observe and

script the pre-observation conference video using the Pre-observation Conference Data Collection Sheet (Activity Packet A2)

  • As a team, refer to Danielson 2013 Domain 1 in order to:
  • Align evidence of Domain 1 collected (i.e., lesson

plan, pre-conference discussion) using the Pre-

  • bservation Conference Data Collection Sheet.
  • Rate individual Domain 1 components
  • Reach consensus on an overall rating for Domain 1

Be prepared to share out

  • 11

Practice: Pre-observation Conference Plan/Structure

Back in your small group:

  • Identify the evidence that would move this

teacher from the rating you gave to the next level

  • Discuss the overall structure you would use

to facilitate a pre-observation conference with this teacher. Create a chart that Includes:

  • Clarifying questions
  • Probing questions
  • Summary
  • Be prepared to share with the whole group

Evidence Analysis - Domain 4

As a team, analyze the critical attributes & Levels of Performance (LoP) for your Domain 4 component as assigned by your presenter:

  • Describe specific evidence reflective of

PROFICIENCY in your district. Reach consensus and document on chart paper.

  • Using the evidence of PROFICIENCY, now

describe what EXCELLENCE would look

  • like. Reach consensus and document on

your chart.

  • When signaled by your facilitator, regroup

as directed and prepare to share your examples with the larger group. Be specific about the difference between proficient and excellent.

Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities Professional responsibilities and behavior outside the classroom.. 4a Reflecting on teaching 4b Maintaining accurate records 4c Communicating with families 4d Participating in a professional community 4e Growing and developing professionally 4f Showing professionalism 13

Practice: Observe/Align/Rate Classroom Practice Prepare Post Conference

a.Observe & Script (A3) b.Individually Align & Rate c.As a team:

  • 1. Share & Compare

2.Reach consensus on ratings of

D2 & D3 components

d.Prepare to Share with Whole

Group

Creating Post-Observation Conference Prompts

  • Draft standard probing questions to facilitate a post-
  • bservation conference using the Domain 4 Evidence

Collection Plan (A4):

  • What standard questions would you establish to facilitate a

post-observation conference? Refer to Domain 4 Components and their Critical Attributes as a guide.

  • What artifacts would you expect teachers to share in the

post-observation conference?

  • How would you connect Component 4a to the remaining

components in Domain 4?

  • Use the Domain 4 Evidence Collection Plan (A4)

to document the above.

4a Reflection on Teaching Rating:___ Evidence: Desired Rating:___ Modified Evidence: Post Conference Structure/Questioning:

On your own: 1. Observe & Script the Post Conference (A5) 2. Align & Rate Evidence Collected for Component 4a With your small group: 1. Reach consensus on a rating for 4a 2. Create a chart as depicted to structure the post observation conference 3. Use the Guide to Probing Questions (P5-P7) as a reference to raise this teacher’s level of reflection. You will need the materials found in your Application Dissemination Packet On your own:

  • Review the two Scenarios provided (one each

for Domains 1 & 4)

  • Using the AD form provided, document the

evidence you collected for each D1 & D4 component.

  • Rate your collected evidence referring to

Danielson 2013 Critical Attributes.

  • Be prepared to justify your ratings with the

entire group.
