Competition Overview for Sep 2019 – May 2020

 The theme for the 2019-2020 season will be ‘Skill set’

As an extension of this years theme of “learning”, the “Skill Set” theme is aimed to develop your photography skills further

The competition team have come up with competition briefs designed to expand your skill sets and focus on particular aspects

  • f photography

 There will be 6 competition themes – 3 print and 3 digital  There will be one Exhibition in print  Our idea is that the exhibition will be split into three genres, different for each group  We want to challenge each group, add variety to the evening, and encourage team

work!!!!

 Group 1 – Creative use of colour  Group 2 – ICM/Zoom Burst/Multiple Exposures  Group 3 – High Key/ Low Key*

 Thoughts on this would be welcome – we’ll finalise the brief later

Competition Overview for Sep 2019 – May 2020

 Seasonal Scape - Print

  • Any type of scape (Landscape, Seascape, Cityscape etc) that clearly shows one of the four seasons, or

seasonal celebrations, events or occasions.

  • So take advantage of the upcoming winter months to make an early start!

 Motion and Movement - tbc

  • Any image that captures the use of motion or movement in a creative or unique way. You can use fast or slow

shutter speeds, layers, and other various techniques to show motion  Tell A Story - tbc

  • The brief is simply, the image must tell a story. Explore photo journalism or street photography to get some
  • inspiration. You can use a single image or a montage to tell the story, up to you.

 Paths/Footpaths/Roads - tbc

  • The image must clearly show a path, road or some other form of strong leading lines. The rest is up to you!

 Square format - Digital

  • This brief is open to any subject or genre, the only criteria is that the image must be in a square format, that is,

square in dimensions/in mount, not an image of a square object. This will be a digital competition.  Portrait - tbc

  • The image must be a portrait of a human or animal, shot in the studio or natural setting, staged or candid, as

long as you capture the subject as a portrait shot.

  • Why is this an interesting competition topic?
  • What are the range of ways by which this brief

could be interpreted?

  • What are the specific challenges of making

good shots on this topic? WE WILL GO INTO A LITTLE MORE DETAIL INTO SOME OF THE TOPICS….

Pla lanning for Competitions

Peter Cox

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Building stock – Your own Portfolio

  • Practice makes perfect:
  • Take many, many pictures
  • Try different types – Landscape /

Portrait / whatever

  • Initially you’ll simply improve technique

and find you need to take less shots to get a good one

  • You’ll probably find that you enjoy some

genres more than others

  • You may find that you begin to develop

a personal style – and this comes to most good photographers in time

slide-20
SLIDE 20

Developing the skill of Selection

  • The more you take, the more you have to edit

and selection of the best becomes confusing!

  • As you process the images:
  • Be selective before processing
  • As you process, give star ratings – to your

favourites

  • Show your favourites to others – ask for

HONEST feedback

  • Use the same analytical skills on your images as

you use to assess the TDCC competitions

  • Publish on Instagram, Facebook, Your own

website You are thus building your own personal portfolio

slide-21
SLIDE 21

Planning ahead for Competitions

We announce the competition schedule and subjects well in advance, so that:

  • You can start thinking about the many ways

the brief can be met

  • You can relate this to your portfolio or decide

to take new

  • You can plan shots – possible seasonal
  • You can take advantage of
  • Holidays
  • Business Travel
  • Days Out
  • You should aim a create a set of possible

images from which to choose

  • Note Print versus Digital

Seasonal Scapes - Chall llenges

The key challenge is to seize the opportunity - do not miss the season!!

  • Time of day
  • Light
  • Weather - Care when photographing snowy

scenes, consider use of polariser, bracketing shots etc,

  • Location
  • Tripod
  • Creating depth
  • Creating interest/drama
  • Ensuring sharpness throughout the image

Capturing Movement

In Photography Adrian Reeve

slide-31
SLIDE 31

Movement as a Competition Subject

Movement photography allows us to capture images that the naked eye can’t see. It’s an opportunity to learn a new skill set that will take your creativity to new heights It can get addictive in the pursuit of the perfect shot! It’s a perfect way of using your camera on long winter dark nights! But best of all it’s good fun

slide-32
SLIDE 32

We are looking at three aspects. Freezing a moving object in a still frame. Depicting the movement

  • f an object in a still

frame ICM Intended Camera Movement, Here we move the camera or adjust the zoom to invoke movement from a still image.

  • Freeze
  • Motion
  • ICM
slide-33
SLIDE 33

Freeze

In order to freeze a moving object we need a very fast shutter speed. The peregrine falcon can fly at 200 mph! This shot was 1/3200 sec f/5.6 ISO 800 190mm. The trade off: High ISO and fast aperture = reduction in quality. Settings: Shutter priority or manual (or sport mode)

slide-34
SLIDE 34

When 1/8000th of a second is not enough

  • Water droplets can’t be captured with high

speed shutters, we have to cheat and use flash to capture the drop.

  • Settings: 1 second F/11 ISO 250 100mm. The

camera is set for 1 second in a black room, the drop is triggered and back lit at the correct time with 2 flashguns 1/64th power (one with a red Gel) the camera captures the split second exposure from the flash gun.

slide-35
SLIDE 35

Motion

  • Here we are showing the path of a moving object

across the frame of the camera, we can capture light trails, flowing water, Stars, Clouds and anything else that moves.

slide-36
SLIDE 36

Slow things down a little (Long Exposure)

  • Use a Tripod!
  • Typically ISO 100, f/11 and anything above

3 or 4 seconds for as long as you want.

  • Pre-focus
  • Low power light sources are best as they

keep the black black!

slide-37
SLIDE 37

Flowing Water

  • This shot was exposed for 25

seconds, ISO 250 f /6.3

  • For these types of shot done

in daylight, we will need the addition of an ND filter or big stopper, depending on how bright it is to reduce the amount of light entering the camera.

  • These filters are measured in

“Stops” and the shutter speed is adjusted accordingly

slide-38
SLIDE 38

Panning

  • Panning is a technique where we follow the moving object with
  • ur camera, to freeze our object against a moving background

giving the impression of motion.

  • For these shots we slow down our shutter speed (1/320)
  • Follow our object through an arc.
  • Take the shot halfway through
  • Continue through the arc
slide-39
SLIDE 39

ICM (Intended Camera Moment) (also Zoom Burst)

  • Similar to the panning shot,

here we are invoking moment in the camera to distort our image and create a unique photo.

  • For this shot simply pan up
  • r down to create the effect.
  • Simply is not a great word,

we need to extend the exposure time to capture the image, and then to compensate for the additional light entering the lens reduce the ISO setting and maybe use an ND filter to reduce the light.

  • 1/13th sec. f/9 ISO 100

SQUARE

slide-43
SLIDE 43

SQUARE - As a Competition topic

Introduces us to a format we may not have used before Square Format can:

  • Help eliminate distractions / concentrates attention to the

story or subject of the image

  • Powerful when wanting to exaggerate diagonals and use the

corners

  • Great for:
  • Shapes & Geometric images
  • Circular subjects
  • Mono
  • Minimalist
  • Portrait
  • Triptychs & diptychs
  • Symmetry

Range of ways by which this subject can be interpreted:

Simple – any type of image in a square frame – not an image of a square shaped object in a non square frame Some say that SQUARE is just a fashion created by Instagram….. When was the square format first introduced? Let’s look at some examples……
