Presentation Purpose  Why is this topic on the board agenda?  To inform the board of the status of the ACTION Zone after Year 1 of implementation  What are we asking the board to do with this information?  This presentation is for information and context  How is this linked to the Strategic Plan, Vision, Mission, goals & core beliefs?  The formation of the ACTION Zone grants 5 APS schools unique autonomy, aligned with the district’s push to use innovate practices to improve our schools and our system. ACTION Zone Pillar I: Create a Climate and Culture for International Leadership Year 1 Innovation Initiative #2:  Implement International Leadership curriculum Purpose: To maximize the assets of our diverse student body and prepare students for success in our global society Year 1 Results: • Each school developed their own international leadership-themed community presentation • Crawford’s Write our World Exhibit is currently on display at the Aurora History Museum until September 22, highlighted here: 9News Video Aurora TV Every Student Shapes a Successful Future 8

ACTION Zone Pillar I: Create a Climate and Culture for International Leadership Year 1 Innovation Initiative #3:  Determine and meet shared PD needs across the Zone Purpose: To empower educators to maximize school calendar and schedule to support the development needs of teachers and leaders, leveraging the expertise of Zone personnel Year 1 Results: • Creation of shared Calendar and Zone-Wide PD Opportunities • 3 additional days of pre-year teacher training and preparation time • Increase in PD hours for teachers from 30 in 2015-16 to 118 in 2017-18 • Facilitation of 128 School Leader training hours Every Student Shapes a Successful Future 9

ACTION Zone Pillar II: Focus on Student-Centered Data Driven Instruction Year 1 Innovation Initiative #1:  Alignment of Interim Assessments for each grade in the Zone Innovation Initiative #2:  Creation of two Data Analysis Protocols Innovation Initiative #3:  Design of Facilitator and Coaching Training for all leaders and Professional Development Training for all teachers on Zone’s approach to Data Driven Instruction All Year 1 Initiatives have been accomplished Every Student Shapes a Successful Future 11

ACTION Zone Pillar III: Develop a Comprehensive Talent Strategy Year 2 Innovation Initiative #1:  Creation of talent recruitment pipelines and partnerships with teacher and leader preparation programs Innovation Initiative #2:  100% hiring of highly skilled school staff though use of rigorous and relevant teacher and leader selection protocol Innovation Initiative #3:  Facilitation of monthly Zone-Wide professional learning communities for teachers and leaders combined with turnaround leadership training Every Student Shapes a Successful Future 14

ACTION Zone Pillar IV: Develop Strong Family and Community Partnerships Year 1 Innovation Initiative #1:  Launched Community in Schools program in each Zone school Innovation Initiative #2:  Used Flexible Funding to:  Hire Zone-wide Student Engagement Advocate (SEA)  Support Funding Expenses for SEA Program  Hired personnel to support Aurora Lights Health Sciences Academy  Maintain Tele-language translation services support  Provide significant funds to each school for unrestricted use All Year 1 Initiatives have been accomplished Every Student Shapes a Successful Future 15
