  2. The Beginning • The first week of school is a very exciting time for your child but may be the first major separation from home and family. • The best thing you can do is show your loving and understanding support .

  3. ID Cards • Every student will be required to wear an ID card during their school day. • IDs will remain at school. • If they loss their ID, the replacement cost is $3.00.

  4. Toys and Sharing • Please keep all toys at home unless otherwise noted by the teacher. • Examples: novelty pencil tops, erasers, jewelry, key chains, stuffed animals, Game Boys, IPods and MP3 players. • Per Katy ISD Policy students are not allowed to bring any electronic devices to school with them.

  5. Transportation • Children will only be released to those listed on the enrollment card. Anyone picking up a student will be required to show a photo ID card. • You must keep the information card UP TO DATE! • If your child will be going home a different way than is listed on the transportation card, the teacher MUST be notified in writing. • For your child’s safety there will be NO EXCEPTIONS!

  6. Transportation Cont. • To expedite loading in the carpool line you should have received a sign from your child’s teacher. Using a broad tip marker you will need to write your child’s name on the sign. These signs are to be placed on your rearview mirror so it can be seen through the windshield.

  7. Walkers • If your child is a walker, please be aware of the new KISD Policy regarding dogs. • Family dogs are to remain off campus property to prevent a child from becoming fearful or possibly injured.

  8. School Times • The school day begins at 8:20 a.m. and ends at 3:40 p.m. Staff members are available to supervise children beginning at 7:55. • If your child arrives before 8:10, they must to go the cafeteria and wait for a kindergarten teacher to pick them up. • However, on the first 3 days of school, you may bring your child directly to their classroom.

  9. Snack • Snack will be included in our daily afternoon schedule. This is a WORKING snack. • Please choose a nutritious, easy to serve, individually wrapped or packaged snack that does not require eating utensils . – Sport top water bottles only – No juice, milk, etc – No pudding, jello, fruit cups, etc.

  10. Lunch • Students may bring their lunch or buy it at school. • If you plan on buying lunch in the cafeteria, PLEASE PRE-PAY !!! KISD has an online lunch payment system that makes it easy to add money to your child’s account. • School lunches are $2.05 for students. • If you are sending in money for lunch, please put the cash or check in an envelope with the child’s name & teacher’s name written on the envelope. PLEASE put their lunch money in their daily folder. • The students will have an ID card that they will bring to the cafeteria if they are buying their lunch.

  11. Lunch Cont. • Before sending your child to school, please go over the lunch menu so they will know what they want. • If you plan on having lunch with your child, PLEASE wait for them down by the cafeteria doors. Special visitor tables are provided where you will enjoy lunch with your child. • Please refrain from having lunch with your child during the first week of school. • After lunch, please tell your child goodbye in the cafeteria. This helps us have a smoother transition back to class.

  12. Birthdays • Although parties are not permitted, you may bring a treat to the front office by 10:00 that will be delivered to your child’s class. They will be able to enjoy the treats during our snack time. Please check with your child’s teacher for any food allergies. – Examples: cupcakes, cookies, donuts, Rice Krispie treats, fruit roll-ups, fruit snacks – No homemade treats

  13. Birthdays Cont. • Party invitations should be mailed from home to prevent hurt feelings and not brought to school. There can be no exceptions. Also no goodie bags or party favors. • If you have not already done so, remember to add your name to the Birthday List in your child’s homeroom .

  14. Clothing & Tote Bags • All clothing and tote bags should be labeled clearly with your child’s name. Please help them and us by labeling everything! You have the option of decorating your child’s tote bag . Tote bags are $4.00 • Please help us keep your child safe and well. Always dress your child appropriately for the weather as we will be going outside for recess daily. • You may want to send an extra set of clothes for accidents that might happen during the school day.

  15. Clothing & Tote Bags Cont. • Please send your child in tennis shoes and comfortable clothing for P.E. as they will not have time to change. • If your child cannot participate in P.E., we must have a written note on that day. • You can see which specials class your child will be in by looking at the behavior chart. • A guide will coming home telling you what days your child will have P.E.

  16. Communication • Communication is very important to us at N.C.E. We will be communicating by your child’s daily folder, parent conferences, grade level notices, notes, report cards, and teacher websites. • Email is the best form of communication during the school day. This is not for change of transportation! • If you would like to speak to us by phone, please leave a message regarding your concern and we will get back to you as soon as possible. • Please allow 24 hours for a response to email and phone calls from your child’s teacher.

  17. Communication Cont. • Please watch for communication in your child’s folder and always check their tote bags and folder everyday ! • Encourage your child to check his/her own tote bag and give you the papers inside as this will help them become more responsible and independent.

  18. Communication Cont. • Communication is important for student success. We hope that you will talk with your child and encourage them to tell you about their day and what they did at school.

  19. Discipline • We strive to create a learning environment that enables children to reach their full potential. For this reason, discipline must be reinforced in order for teachers to teach and students to learn. • Please refer to the NCE Expectations sheet on the inside cover of your child’s Take -Home folder. Each day you will be able to see at a glance how your child behaved at school. The children have many opportunities to earn stickers, smiley faces, happy tickets, etc. for making wise choices.

  20. Discipline Cont. • At the end of the day, your child’s teacher will put a sticker or stamp on each school day attended. If your child moves their clip for that day, it will be marked with a number from below and an explanation. The following is the criteria for what will be recorded on the report card regarding clip movement: 0-5 same category = S; 6-8 same category = N; 9+ same category = U; 9- 12 scattered entries = N in Disciplines Self; 13+ scattered = U Disciplines Self.

  22. Language Arts • We use a balanced literacy approach to teach language arts. This method blends the best of “whole language” and “phonics” instruction. Neither is completely effective without the other and the results are amazing!

  23. Components of Balanced Literacy: • Reading TO children (Read Alouds) • Reading WITH children (Shared Reading & Focus Poetry) • Reading BY children (Guided Reading & Independent Reading)

  24. Balanced Literacy Also Includes: • Writing FOR children (Teacher- Modeled) • Writing WITH children (Shared Writing & Interactive Writing) • Writing BY children (Independent Writing)

  25. Phonemic Awareness & Phonics • Students will also receive phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. • Kindergarteners will spend time each day discovering language in order to develop an understanding of important skills such rhyming, alliteration, segmenting, and blending.

Social Studies, Science and Health • In social studies, science and health, children will learn about themselves, others and the world around them. • We will be using real objects, video clips, books, graphs and experiments to provide information and opportunities for them to learn and explore. • We will have many Science Labs this year. You will have volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

  27. Mathematics • Our mathematics program involves children in activities that create a foundation for mathematical understanding. • They will discover the world of math through numeracy, sorting, classifying, patterning, measuring, graphing and estimating.

  28. Computers & Technology • Each week your child will have the opportunity to go to the computer lab where they will work on language & math skills. • In addition to the computer lab, your child will also be using the computer in the classroom and other electronic devices. • Each classroom has a Smart Board that will also be used for many wonderful interactive lessons.

  29. Friday Readers • Friday Readers is a special time every Friday where you are invited to come and read with your child and their new friends. • A note will be sent home with the beginning date and time. • Please bring 4-5 books from home to share with the children.
